Lewis Roberts (naturalist)
Lewis Roberts, OAM, (born 1950) is a distinguished naturalist and botanical illustrator. Lewis and his brother, Charlie Roberts, are probably the leading experts on the flora and fauna of south-eastern part Cape York Peninsula and the northern Wet Tropics area. For three generations his family has lived at Shipton's Flat, about 45 km south of Cooktown, where he and Charlie were home-schooled. His father, Jack Lewis, was a tin miner and self-taught naturalist. Background Since about 1960, most of the botanists and zoologists who have conducted research in their area have sought advice or field assistance from the Roberts brothers. Both are "Honoraries" to the Queensland Museum. Lewis Roberts has a particular interest in orchids, especially the species of Cape York Peninsula and the Wet Tropics. An epiphyte is an organism that grows on the surface of a plant and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, water (in marine environments) or from debris accumulating around it. The plants on which epiphytes grow are called phorophytes. Iron Range is a coastal locality in the Shire of Cook, Queensland, Australia. In the , Iron Range had a population of 14 people. The town of Portland Road is on a north-east headland in the locality (). Geography Iron Range is on the north-east coast of the Cape York Peninsula. Weymouth Bay is off the north-eastern coast of locality. All of the locality of Iron Range is occupied by the Kutini Payamu National Park (formerly the Iron Range National Park).
