Robert Smith (Derbyshire Cricketer)
Robert Posnett Smith (1 November 1848 – 1 May 1899), later known as Robert Posnett Stevens, was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1871 and 1884 and was captain of the side from 1876 to 1883. He was a member of the team that played Derbyshire's first match in May 1871. Smith was born in Sawley, the son of John Smith a farmer and his wife Ruth. He was educated at Castle Donington School in Leicestershire and continued farming at Sawley. Smith took part in the very first fixture played by Derbyshire as a county team in the 1871 season, against a Lancashire side who posted the lowest total against Derbyshire in the history of first-class cricket. Sawley, Derbyshire
Sawley is a village and civil parish within the Borough of Erewash, in southeast Derbyshire, England. With a slightly higher than average number of people over 65, the population of just the civil parish was measured at 6,629 as at the 2011 Census. Luke Greenwood
Luke Greenwood (13 July 1834 – 1 November 1909) was an English first-class cricketer, who played 48 matches for Sheffield and Yorkshire from 1861 to 1874. Born in Cowmes, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, Greenwood was a useful player verging on all-rounder, who also played for Yorkshire with Stockton-on-Tees (1861), the North of England (1863-1864), the United England Eleven (1865), the Players (1865-1866), England (1867), North of the Thames (1868) and the United North of England Eleven (1870-1875), appearing in sixty nine matches all together. A right-handed lower order batsman, he scored 1,244 runs at 11.96, with a best of 83 against Surrey. A right arm fast round arm bowler, he took 113 wickets at 18.28, with a best of 8 for 35 against Cambridgeshire. He also took 6 for 43 against Surrey in the County Championship. The Canada national cricket team represents Canada in international cricket. The team is organised by Cricket Canada, which became an Associate Member of the International Cricket Council (ICC) in 1968. George Barrington (cricketer)
George Bainbridge Barrington (20 April 1857 – 29 March 1942) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1880 and 1887. Barrington was born in Pimlico, London, the son of G Barrington. He was educated at Repton School but did not play for the school side as he left in 1873 aged 16. He made several successful appearances for the Derbyshire Friars cricket club and played miscellaneous games for Derbyshire in the 1879 season against Harrow Wanderers and the Derbyshire Colts. He made his first-class debut for Derbyshire in the 1880 season against a team of touring Australians, in which he scored a duck in his first innings but became the top scorer for the team in the second, making 24 before he was run out. Harry Boyle (cricketer)
Henry Frederick "Harry" Boyle (10 December 1847 – 21 November 1907) was a leading Australian Test cricketer of the late 1870s and early 1880s. Boyle played for Victoria and had the distinction of visiting England with the three earliest Australian representative touring teams, in 1878, 1880 and 1882. The slightly reticent Boyle was chosen as captain for the 1880 tour but a shipboard team meeting voted to replace him with the more outgoing Billy Murdoch before their arrival. An outstanding medium-pacer, Boyle's greatest strengths were said to be the accuracy of his deliveries and his ability to probe a batsman's weaknesses. His bowling was considered to be particularly effective under English conditions. His achievements with the ball were often overshadowed by the exploits of his brilliant team mate, "The Demon Bowler", Fred Spofforth. The Australian cricket team in England in 1880 played nine first-class matches including one Test, which was the first ever played in England. They were captained by W.L. Murdoch. The team had difficulty in arranging fixtures against the counties, and prior to the Test match in early September had played only four matches that are now rated as first-class (as well as many fixtures against weaker opposition), despite having already been in England for almost four months. The Test was a late addition to the programme, being arranged at the instigation of the Surrey secretary, C. W. Alcock, who asked Lord Harris to put together a side. A. N. Hornby, Tom Emmett and George Ulyett refused to play, having unpleasant memories of the Sydney Riot of 1879, but Australia were also seriously handicapped, being without their star bowler, Fred Spofforth. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1880 was the tenth season of the English cricket club Derbyshire. Derbyshire played Lancashire and Yorkshire, whom they had played in the previous season. However, instead of Hampshire and Nottinghamshire, they played against Sussex for the first time and Kent, whom they had played in a previous season. 1880 season Derbyshire played eight county games in 1880, two each against Lancashire, Kent, Sussex and Yorkshire. Hampshire replaced Nottinghamshire as the third county to play Derbyshire, together with Lancashire and Kent.
