Leicester was a parliamentary borough in Leicestershire, which elected two members of parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons from 1295 until 1918, when it was split into three single-member divisions. History Leicester sent burgesses to Parliament for the first time in 1295. Originally both Members were chosen by the whole 'commons' of the borough until at least 1407, when Thomas Denton and John Tonge were stated to have been chosen 'per totam communitatem tocius burgi'. At some unknown date before the middle of the 15th century, however, the 'commons', lost power within the borough and were restricted to the election of just one of the Members, the other being chosen by the mayor and 24 jurats (or aldermen). This situation was reversed by the middle of the sixteenth century. Robert Norton (11 October 1838 – 7 June 1926) was an English Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1885 to 1892. Norton was the son of William Norton of Burcott House, Northamptonshire. He was educated privately and was called to the bar at Middle Temple in 1865. He was a Clerk in the War Office. Robert Norton (Virginia Politician)
Robert Norton (born about 1840) was a former slave who became a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1869 until 1874 and 1876 until 1883. He was one of three brothers who held office. His much older brother Frederick S. Norton was a member of the House of Delegates from 1869 until 1871, and his younger brother was Daniel M. Norton. They were reportedly the children of a slave and her owner and escaped to Troy, New York. Norton and his brother Daniel returned to Yorktown, Virginia after the American Civil War. He was a shopkeeper and farmer. Running as an independent in 1874 for a seat in the U.S. Congress, he criticized his White Republican incumbent opponent, James H. Platt Jr., as a carpetbagger and urged voters to elect a "colored" man. Democrat John Goode won the election in November 1874. Norton appeared on the Readjuster Party ticket in November 1881. Robert Norton (boxer)
Robert Norton (born 20 January 1972) is a British former professional boxer who competed from 1993 to 2011. He held the British and Commonwealth cruiserweight titles between 2008 and 2011. Once beaten by Pat Mallen Early career Norton started his professional career in September 1993, with a 2nd round win over Stuart Fleet in Walsall. By April 1997 he had compiled an unbeaten record of 17 wins against no defeats and only one draw (against Chris Woollas) and had earned a shot at the Commonwealth cruiserweight title. He travelled to Northern Ireland to challenge holder Darren Corbett in December 1997 and lasted the full 12 rounds in what was to be an unsuccessful attempt. The defeat to Corbett was to be his first as a professional.
