Robert Ker, 1st Earl Of Roxburghe
Robert Ker, 1st Earl of Roxburghe (1650) was a Scottish nobleman. Early life He was the eldest son of William Ker of Cessford (died 1605), and Janet Douglas. His mother was the widow of James Tweedie of Drumelzier, and the third daughter of Sir James Douglas of Drumlanrig. His paternal grandfather was Sir Walter Ker of Cessford (died ), who fought against Mary, Queen of Scots, both at Carberry Hill and at Langside. Career He was knighted on 17 May 1590 at the coronation of Anne of Denmark. In December 1590 he was involved in the assassination of William Kerr of Ancram who was ambushed on the stairs at the entry to his lodging by two of Robert's followers who shot him with a pistol called a "dag". Ker had married Margaret Maitland, a niece of the Chancellor, John Maitland of Thirlestane. In 1592 Ker was able to help Maitland into the favour of Anne of Denmark. Robert Ker Of Kersland
Robert Ker (the younger) known as Robert Ker of Kersland was a Covenanter. He sympathised with the insurgents who fought at Rullion Green and consequently was declared a rebel and his lands became forfeit. He escaped to Holland but following his wife home on business he was captured while visiting her in her sick-bed in Edinburgh. He spent many years in various jails. He is remembered by Christian historians and biographers such as Wodrow and Howie as one who suffered for the Presbyterian cause in Scotland. Life Robert Ker of Kersland took a decided part, early in life, with the Covenanters; and, from his inflexible integrity, enjoyed the confidence of the party to a considerable degree. Robert Ker, 3rd Earl of Roxburghe PC (6 May 1682) was a Scottish nobleman. Early life Ker was the eldest son of four sons born to William Ker, 2nd Earl of Roxburghe and the Honourable Jane Ker, who were first cousins. Among his younger brothers were William Ker, who served as Sheriff of Tweeddale, and John Ker, who later took the surname Bellenden and became 2nd Lord Bellenden of Broughton (after inheriting from their first cousin twice removed, William Bellenden, 1st Lord Bellenden, the son of Sir James Bellenden of Broughton, and Margaret Ker). His only sister, Lady Jean Ker, was married to Colin Lindsay, 3rd Earl of Balcarres, a prominent supporter of James II of England. The Duke of Roxburghe () is a title in the peerage of Scotland created in 1707 along with the titles ''Marquess of Bowmont and Cessford'', ''Earl of Kelso'' and ''Viscount Broxmouth''. John Ker, 5th Earl of Roxburghe became the first holder of these titles. The title is derived from the royal burgh of Roxburgh in the Scottish Borders that in 1460 the Scots captured and destroyed. Originally created Earl of Roxburghe in 1616, before the elevation to duke, a number of other subsidiary titles are held: ''Marquess of Bowmont and Cessford'' (created 1707), ''Earl of Kelso'' (1707), ''Earl Innes'' (1837), ''Viscount Broxmouth'' (1707), ''Lord Roxburghe'' (1600), and ''Lord Ker of Cessford and Cavertoun'' (1616). Robert Ker, 2nd Duke of Roxburghe ( – 20 August 1755) was a Scottish peer. Ker was the only son of the 1st Duke of Roxburghe and Lady Mary Finch, daughter of Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham, by his first wife Lady Essex Rich. On 24 May 1722 he was created Earl Ker, of Wakefield in the County of York, and Baron Ker, of Wakefield in the County of York (both in the Peerage of Great Britain). On 16 June 1739 he married his half-cousin Essex Mostyn, daughter of Sir Roger Mostyn, 3rd Baronet, and Essex Finch, daughter of above-mentioned Earl of Nottingham by his 2nd wife Hon. Anne Hatton. Robert Ker
Robert Ker (August 14, 1824 – 12 February 1879) was the first Auditor General of the British colonies which later became and the Canadian province of British Columbia. A descendant of the Dukes of Roxburghe and cousin of Allan Ebenezer Ker, Robert was born in Dalkeith and educated in Scotland, and came to Vancouver Island in 1859. He was friendly with colonial governor Sir James Douglas and John Sebastian Helmcken. Ker was the auditor general of the first Colony of British Columbia and also acted as auditor general of the Colony of Vancouver Island. When the two colonies united in 1866, he continued in the position of auditor general. Upon Canadian Confederation in 1867, he was appointed to the position of Dominion paymaster general. He died in Victoria, British Columbia of exposure during a snowstorm.
