Robert Greville, 2nd Baron Brooke
Robert Greville, 2nd Baron Brooke (May 1607 – 4 March 1643) was a radical Puritan activist and leading member of the opposition to Charles I of England prior to the outbreak of the First English Civil War in August 1642. Appointed Roundhead, Parliamentarian commander in Staffordshire and Warwickshire, he was killed by a Cavalier, Royalist sniper at Lichfield on 2 March 1643. The son of a minor member of the Lincolnshire gentry, Greville was adopted at the age of four by his childless distant cousin Fulke Greville, 1st Baron Brooke, and inherited his title and Warwick Castle in 1628. A devout Calvinism, Calvinist, he was closely associated with Puritan activists and opponents of the 1629 to 1640 period of Personal Rule, including John Pym, John Hampden and Arthur Haselrig. Robert Brooke-Popham
Air Chief Marshal Sir Henry Robert Moore Brooke-Popham, (18 September 1878 – 20 October 1953) was a senior commander in the Royal Air Force. During the First World War he served in the Royal Flying Corps as a wing commander and senior staff officer. Remaining in the new Royal Air Force (RAF) after the war, Brooke-Popham was the first commandant of its Staff College at Andover and later held high command in the Middle East. He was Governor of Kenya in the late 1930s. Most notably, Brooke-Popham was Commander-in-Chief of the British Far East Command until being replaced a few weeks before Singapore fell to Japanese troops. Sir Robert Brooke (c. 1572 – 10 July 1646) was an English landowner, magistrate, commissioner, administrator and MP who sat in the House of Commons between 1624 and 1629. He made his country seat at Cockfield Hall, Yoxford, Suffolk. Origins Robert Brooke was the son of Robert Brooke, citizen and Grocer of Bucklersbury in London, Sheriff of London (1590-91) and Alderman (1590–99), and his wife, Ursula, daughter of Robert Offley, who married 5 May 1572 at St Benet's, London. The Brooke family were seated of old at Holditch manor in Thorncombe, Devon (now Dorset), where Sir Thomas Brooke, MP (died 1418) and his wife, Joan ( Hanham; died 1437), have a monumental brass memorial. Robert Brooke was one of two Members of the Parliament of England for the constituency of York between 1584 and 1586 and also between 1586 and 1588. Life and politics Robert was born in 1531 in Hunslet. His father was also named Robert. He married Jane, daughter of Christopher Maltby of Thornton in Pickering. Robert Brooke (1744–1811) was a lieutenant-colonel in the army of Bengal and governor of the island of St Helena from 1788 to 1800. He married, in 1775, Anna Maria Mapletoft, daughter of Reverend Robert Mapletoft, assistant chaplain to the East India Company at St John's, Calcutta; they had five sons and two daughters. Early history Brooke was born in Rathavan House, Co. Cavan, Ireland, and entered the service of the East India Company in 1764 as a cadet, aged 20. After a career in military administration in India, he took sick leave and moved to Co. Kildare in Ireland. In 1775 he married Anna Maria Mapletoft Wynne and built Killybegs House (demolished in 1958). Robert Wesley Brooke (born December 18, 1960) is an American former professional ice hockey forward who played 447 games in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the New York Rangers, Minnesota North Stars, and New Jersey Devils between 1984 and 1990. Internationally Brooke played for the American national team at several tournaments, including the 1984 Winter Olympics and the 1984 and 1987 Canada Cups, as well as three World Championships. Robert Brooke (cricket Writer)
Robert William Brooke (born 5 May 1940) is an English cricket writer who has published over 20 books about the game, including those referred to in the bibliography below. Born in Solihull, Brooke attended school in Dorridge and Yardley Grammar School in Birmingham. He is a longtime Warwickshire CCC member who served as the club's honorary librarian for several years. He has also been active in MCC, the Cricket Society and the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians (ACS), of which he was the co-founder in 1973. Mr Brooke was the ACS chairman from 1973 to 1979 and was the editor of the ACS journal, the ''Cricket Statistician'' from 1973 to 1985.
