''Hollyoaks'' is a long-running Channel 4 soap opera in the United Kingdom. This is a list of characters who first appeared on the programme during 2010, listed in order of their first appearance. In January 2010, it was announced that Paul Marquess would be taking over the role of series producer from Lucy Allan, who had been with the show for one year. Marquess fully took control on 17 January 2010, onwards. March saw the introduction of Jem Costello, a new love interest for Gilly Roach. The character of Eva Strong was introduced in April as the biological mother of Anita Roy, and Texas Longford joined ''Hollyoaks'' in May. Marquess's first major casting was former '' Footballers Wives'' actress Phina Oruche in the role of Gabby Sharpe along with her children Amber and Taylor and husband Phil, all of whom appeared in June. ''Hollyoaks'' is a British soap opera which began airing on Channel 4 on 23 October 1995. It was created by Phil Redmond, who had previously conceived the soap opera ''Brookside (TV series), Brookside''. Since 2005, episodes have been aired on sister channel E4 (TV channel), E4 a day prior to their broadcast on Channel 4. At its inception, the soap was targeted towards an adolescent and young adult audience but has since broadened its appeal to all age groups. ''Hollyoaks'' has covered various taboo subjects rarely seen on British television, for which it has received List of awards and nominations received by Hollyoaks, numerous awards. Carl Costello
Carl Costello is a fictional character from the Channel 4 soap opera ''Hollyoaks'', played by Paul Opacic. The character was introduced by executive producer Paul Marquess and he debuted on screen during the episode broadcast on 19 July 2010. Carl arrived in the village as the new owner of The Dog in the Pond and the father of established character Jem Costello (Helen Russell-Clark). Carl departed from ''Hollyoaks'' on 1 December 2011 with his son Jason Costello (Victoria Atkin). Opacic later reprised his role and returned to ''Hollyoaks'' on 26 September 2012 and left again on the 5 October 2012. Opacic reprised his role once more in January 2013, which coincided with the exit of Mitzeee Minniver (Rachel Shenton). He returned on 25 January 2013 and departed again on 15 February 2013. Opacic returned again for a guest appearance on 10 July 2018, which ended in his character being murdered by Breda McQueen (Moya Brady) on 11 July 2018. Diane O'Connor
Diane Hutchinson (also O'Connor) is a fictional character from the British Channel 4 soap opera ''Hollyoaks'', played by Alex Fletcher. In 2010, ''Hollyoaks'' series producer, Paul Marquess, embarked on the show's rejuvenation and axed a number of cast members. To compensate for the departures, the character of Diane and her family were created and introduced. Fletcher's casting was announced in June 2010 and she began filming her scenes in the same month. The actress said working on the show is practical as she does not have to relocate. She made her first on-screen appearance on 1 September 2010. Diane was introduced with her husband, Rob (Gary Cargill) and stepchildren, Sinead ( Stephanie Davis) and Finn ( Connor Wilkinson/Keith Rice).
