''Rio'' is an album by Uri Caine which was recorded and released on the Winter & Winter label in 2001. The album explores Brazilian music, and features of large ensemble of Brazilian musicians with an emphasis on percussion. Reception In his review for Allmusic, Glenn Astarita notes that "With this effort, Caine seemingly derives inspiration from the rhythmic structures while melding his thematic inventions into the percussionists' temporal planes. Nonetheless, the artist captures and illustrates the less commercial side of what might be considered indigenous Brazilian music". On ''All About Jazz'' C. Michael Bailey said "The Brazilian music presented here is not the plush Bossa one would expect. Uri Caine
Uri Caine (born June 8, 1956, Philadelphia, United States) is an American classical and jazz pianist and composer. Biography Early years The son of Burton Caine, a professor at Temple Law School, and poet Shulamith Wechter Caine, Caine began playing piano at seven and studied with French jazz pianist Bernard Peiffer at 12. He later studied at the University of Pennsylvania, where he came under the tutelage of George Crumb. He also gained a greater familiarity with classical music in this period and worked at clubs in Philadelphia. Caine played professionally after 1981, and by 1985 had his recording debut with the Rochester-Gerald Veasley band. In the 1980s, he moved to New York City, where he continues to live. His solo recording debut was in 1992. He also appeared on a klezmer album (Don Byron Plays the Music of Mickey Katz, 1993) and other recordings with modern jazz musicians Don Byron and Dave Douglas, among many others. Jair Rodrigues M. Oliveira (Jairzinho Oliveira, born March 17, 1975 in São Paulo, São Paulo) is a Brazilian composer, singer and producer. He is the son of the late Brazilian musician Jair Rodrigues and brother to singer Luciana Mello. In the early 1980s Jair was a co-star on the Brazilian children's television program Balão Mágico ("Magic Balloon"). A volunteer staff publishes news, album reviews, articles, videos, and listings of concerts and other events having to do with jazz.
