Ring-tailed Cat
The ringtail (''Bassariscus astutus'') is a mammal of the Procyonidae, raccoon family native to arid regions of North America. It is widely distributed and well adapted to disturbed areas. It has been legally trapped for its fur. It is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It is also known as the ringtail cat, ring-tailed cat, miner's cat or bassarisk, and is sometimes called a cacomistle, though this term seems to be more often used to refer to ''cacomistle, Bassariscus sumichrasti''. The ringtail is the state mammal of Arizona. Description The ringtail is black to dark brown in color with pale underparts. The animal has a pointed muzzle with long whiskers, similar to that of a fox (its Latin name means ‘clever little fox’) and its body resembles that of a cat. Ring-tailed Cardinalfish
The ring-tailed cardinalfish (''Ostorhinchus aureus'') is a widespread fish species in the family Apogonidae found in the Red Sea and off East Africa to Papua New Guinea, north to Japan, and south to Australia. Taxonomy The French naturalist Philibert Commerson provided the first description of this fish from Réunion in the western Indian Ocean, but it was not published in a format allowing full citation. Therefore, the species name and description by Bernard Germain de Lacépède (who acknowledged Commerson) takes precedence, albeit with a nod to Commerson.Lacépède, B. G. E. (1802''Histoire naturelle des poissons. v. 4, p.273''/ref> With no original or subsequent illustrations or specimens denoted as types, Fricke nominated a neotype in 1999 but subsequently withdrew it.Fricke, R. HMS Ringtail
RNAS Burscough, also known as HMS ''Ringtail'', was a Fleet Air Arm (FAA) naval air station which was southwest of Burscough, Lancashire. The Admiralty acquired of land in December 1942 and the airfield was built with four narrow runways and several hangars, being commissioned on 1 September 1943. It was used to train for landing aircraft on aircraft carriers. Specifically, according to Aldon P. Ferguson's book ''Lancashire Airfields in the Second World War'': "it was constructed to the normal Navy plan with four runways instead of three, all of which were only 30 yards wide instead of the RAF standard 50 yards. The extra runway allowed the aircraft to land and take off as close as possible into the wind, with eight directions to choose from. The narrower landing strips also simulated take off and landing on aircraft carriers." The name HMS ''Ringtail'' was as for a ship because it was a Naval airfield, rather than a Royal Air Force one, and it was named was for a bird. (N ...

Ring-tails (harrier)
A harrier is any of the several species of diurnal hawks sometimes placed in the subfamily Circinae of the bird of prey family Accipitridae. Harriers characteristically hunt by flying low over open ground, feeding on small mammals, reptiles, or birds. The young of the species are sometimes referred to as ring-tail harriers. They are distinctive with long wings, a long narrow tail, the slow and low flight over grasslands and skull peculiarities. The harriers are thought to have diversified with the expansion of grasslands and the emergence of grasses about 6 to 8 million years ago during the Late Miocene and Pliocene. Taxonomy The genus ''Circus'' was introduced by the French naturalist Bernard Germain de Lacépède in 1799. The type species was subsequently designated as the western marsh harrier. Most harriers are placed in this genus. The word ''Circus'' is derived from the Ancient Greek ''kirkos'', referring to a bird of prey named for its circling flight (''kirkos'', ...
