The National System of Protected Natural Areas of Uruguay ( es, Sistema nacional de áreas naturales protegidas de Uruguay, commonly abbreviated as SNAP) is an instrument of policy implementation and national environmental action plans for Uruguay. Its creation was established by Law 17,234 of February 22, 2000, which was regulated by Executive Decree No. 52/005 of February 16, 2005. This law aims to "''harmonize the criteria for planning and managing protected areas under certain categories, with a single regulation that sets the guidelines system''" (Art. 1). The politics of Uruguay abide by a presidential representative democratic republic, under which the President of Uruguay is both the head of state and the head of government, as well as a multiform party system. The president exercises executive power and legislative power and is vested in the two chambers of the General Assembly of Uruguay. The Judiciary is independent from the executive and legislature. Bioma Pampa Biosphere Reserve
The Bioma Pampa Quebradas del Norte is a protected ecological area in Uruguay, protected by UNESCO since 2 June 2014. This biological reserve consists out of a landscape with native grasses, streams and subtropical rainforests. The Nature reserve, biosphere reserve has a surface area of 110,882 hectares, consisting of a mosaic of ecosystems. Flora and fauna The reserve serves as a corridor for the entry of species of subtropical origin to the Uruguayan territory. Inside of the reserve there are many rare species of reptiles and amphibians. The area consists of unique features of the landscape with different species of plants and animals. Laguna Garzón
Laguna José Ignacio (José Ignacio Lagoon) is a body of water located between Maldonado Department and Rocha Department, Uruguay. A sandbank separates it from the Atlantic Ocean. This coastal lagoon was previously served by a small 2-vehicle ferry that required daylight and good weather to operate; in December 2015, the Laguna Garzón Bridge on Route 10 was opened to vehicular traffic, providing a crossing for pedestrians and up to approximately 1,000 vehicles a day.
