Riflemen's Star
Riflemen's Star ( lt, Šaulių žvaigždė) is a Orders, decorations, and medals of Lithuania, decoration bestowed by the Ministry of National Defence (Lithuania), Minister of National Defence of the Lithuania, Republic of Lithuania. The star is awarded to distinguished members of the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union, other citizens of Lithuania and foreign countries for merits to the Riflemen's Union and the Republic of Lithuania. The Riflemen's star is recognised as an Order (distinction), order. History The idea of an award for the members of the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union was raised in 1927, before the tenth anniversary of the Union. However, the description and the statute of the order was approved only in 1930. The star was designed by the sculptor Petras Rimša. The first stars were awarded on 24 June 1931. 892 people received the award in interwar Lithuania. Trumpet
The trumpet is a brass instrument commonly used in classical and jazz ensembles. The trumpet group ranges from the piccolo trumpet—with the highest register in the brass family—to the bass trumpet, pitched one octave below the standard B or C trumpet. Valdas Adamkus
Valdas Adamkus (; born Voldemaras Adamkavičius; 3 November 1926) is a Lithuanian-American politician, diplomat and civil engineer. He served as the 5th and 7th President of Lithuania from 1998 to 2003 and again from 2004 to 2009. Adamkus' first tenure as president lasted for five years, from 26 February 1998 to 28 February 2003, following his defeat by Rolandas Paksas in the 2003 presidential election. Paksas was later impeached and removed from office by a parliamentary vote on 6 April 2004. Soon afterwards, when a new election was announced, Adamkus again ran for president and was re-elected. His approval ratings increased during this period and become a highly regarded moral authority in the state. He was succeeded as president on 12 July 2009 by Dalia Grybauskaitė. Bernardas Brazdžionis
Bernardas Brazdžionis (1907 January 11 in Stebeikėliai - 2002 July 11 in Los Angeles) was a Lithuanian poet. Bernardas Brazdžionis also used various pen names, such as '' Vytė Nemunėlis'', ''Jaunasis Vaidevutis''. Biography Bernardas Brazdžionis was born in Stebeikėliai in 1907, however, after one year Brazdžionis' family emigrated to United States. Brazdžionis along with his family stayed in the US until 1914 when they returned to Lithuania. Bernardas Brazdžionis finished Biržai gymnasium in 1929, soon after graduation, he enrolled in Vytautas Magnus University, which Brazdžionis finished in 1934. Bernardas Brazdžionis helped to copyread various Lithuanian journals and papers, like ''Ateities spinduliai'', ''Pradalgės''. He also wrote critiques of various books. Petras Ciunis
Petras Ciunis (June 26, 1898 in Perloja – December 29, 1979 in Vilnius) was a Lithuanian army officer, educator. Biography Lithuanian Wars of Independence In 1918, Ciunis graduated from Voronezh Teachers' Seminary (a subsidiary of Tartu University at the time). In February 1919, he volunteered for the 1st Infantry Regiment of the Lithuanian Army. In June of the same year he started education at the War School of Kaunas. Upon graduation he was assigned to the 1st Infantry Regiment as company chief. Interbellum In July 1925, he graduated from the high courses for officers and became logistics and later drill company chief in the 1st Infantry Regiment in Ukmergė. In 1926 he became a captain. Antanas Gustaitis
Antanas Gustaitis (March 26, 1898 – October 16, 1941) was an officer in the Lithuanian Armed Forces who modernized the Lithuanian Air Force, which at that time was part of the Lithuanian Army. He was the architect or aeronautical engineer who undertook the task to design and construct several military trainers and reconnaissance aircraft. Gustaitis was born in the village of Obelinė, in Javaravas county, in the Marijampolė district. He attended high school in Yaroslavl, and from there studied at the Institute of Engineering and School of Artillery in Petrograd. After joining the Lithuanian Army in 1919, he graduated from the School of Military Aviation as a Junior Lieutenant in 1920. Later that year, he saw action in the Polish-Lithuanian War. Trimitas (magazine)
''Trimitas'' (literally: ''trumpet'') is the official magazine of the Lithuanian Riflemen's Union. The first issue was published in May 1920 in Kaunas. It was a weekly magazine. Its editors included priest Juozas Tumas-Vaižgantas (nominally), Matas Šalčius, Rapolas Skipitis, Teodoras Daukantas, Antanas Žmuidzinavičius, Juozas Purickis, and many others. The circulation grew from 5,000 in 1920 to 25,000 in 1939 and 32,000 in 1940. The magazine and the Riflemen's Union were banned soon after the Soviet occupation of Lithuania in June 1940. Both the union and the magazine were reestablished after Lithuania declared independence in March 1990. The circulation was 11,800 in 1990, 2,000 in 1997, and 1,000 in 2013. Stasys Raštikis
Stasys Raštikis (September 13, 1896 – May 3, 1985) was a Lithuanian military officer, ultimately obtaining the rank of divisional general. He was the commander of the Lithuanian Army from September 21, 1934, to April 23, 1940. During World War I, he served in the Imperial Russian Army mostly in the Caucasus Campaign. After return to Lithuania in 1918, he joined the newly formed Lithuanian Army and fought in the Lithuanian–Soviet War. He was severely injured and spent 20 months in Soviet captivity. He returned to the 5th Infantry Regiment and later joined the Intelligence Department of the General Staff. The coup d'état of December 1926 brought his future uncle-in-law Antanas Smetona to power and propelled his career. Lauri Malmberg
Kaarlo Lauri Torvald Malmberg (May 8, 1888 in Helsinki – March 14, 1948 in Helsinki) was a Finnish lieutenant general and son of Emil and Aino Malmberg. He was the Chief of Defence of the Finnish Defence Forces in 1925. General Malmberg served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Finnish Civil Guards (a voluntary paramilitary defence organization) from 1921 to 1944, when the organization was abolished as an "anti-Soviet" organization. He also served as the Minister of Defence from 1924 to 1925. At the time there was a power struggle between German-trained and Russian-trained officers in the Defence Forces. Antanas Žmuidzinavičius
Antanas Žmuidzinavičius ( pl, Antoni Żmujdzinowicz, 31 October 1876 – 9 August 1966) was a Lithuanian painter and art collector. Educated at the Veiveriai Teachers' Seminary, Žmuidzinavičius worked as a teacher while pursuing art education in the evenings in Warsaw. He further studied at the Académie Colarossi and Académie Vitti in Paris. In 1906, he returned to Lithuania and organized the First Exhibition of Lithuanian Art and the Lithuanian Art Society which he chaired. He also established the Vilnius Art Society which united artists of different nationalities. In 1908–1909 and 1921–1924, he toured western Europe and the United States. Statehood Day (Lithuania)
Statehood Day or Coronation Day is an annual public holiday in Lithuania celebrated on July 6 to commemorate the coronation in 1253 of Mindaugas as the only King of Lithuania. The exact day of the event is disputable and was chosen according to the hypothesis of Edvardas Gudavičius, formulated in 1989. The day has officially been celebrated since 1991.
