Rickreall Creek
Rickreall Creek is a stream in Polk County, Oregon, United States rising on Laurel Mountain in the Central Oregon Coast Range and draining into the Willamette River west of Salem at Eola. The creek passes through the city of Dallas and the unincorporated community of Rickreall. The origin of the name is under some dispute, but one theory says that "Rickreall" is a corruption of "La Creole", La Creole River being another name for the stream. Washington (steamboat 1851)
''Washington'' was an early steamboat operated in the states of California and Oregon. ''Washington'' was built in California and was initially operated on the Sacramento River. In 1851, the steamer was purchased and brought on a ship to the Oregon Territory, where it was operated on the Willamette River until the summer of 1853. ''Washington'' was sold again, and then transferred to the Oregon coast, where it operated on the Umpqua River, on the Coquille River and on Coos Bay. ''Washington'' was able to operate for shorter distances over the open ocean along the Oregon coast. The steamer was wrecked by a boiler explosion in December 1857, near Scottsburg, O.T., on the Umpqua river. Design ''Washington'' had an iron hull and driven by twin propellers. The Pumping Station Bridge was a covered bridge spanning Rickreall Creek, near Ellendale, Oregon, in the United States. The bridge collapsed during a flood on November 24, 1986. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1979. The bridge was removed from the NRHP in 1987 after the collapse. Pomona (sternwheeler)
''Pomona'' was a steamboat which operated on the Willamette, Columbia and Cowlitz rivers from 1898 to 1940. ''Pomona'' was specially designed to operate in low water conditions such as typically prevailed in the summer months in Oregon. ''Pomona'' was one of the few steamers that could regularly navigate to Corvallis, Oregon, which was the practical head of navigation on the Willamette. In 1926, ''Pomona'' was substantially rebuilt, and served afterwards as a towboat. In 1940, ''Pomona'' was converted into an unpowered floating storehouse. Design, construction and dimensions ''Pomona'' was built for the Oregon City Transportation Company ("O.C.T.C."), which had been organized by the Graham family in 1889. Multnomah (sidewheeler 1851)
The ''Multnomah'' was one of the first steamboats to operate on the Willamette and Yamhill rivers. This vessel should not be confused with the ''Multnomah'', a steamboat built in Portland, Oregon in 1885, which was larger and of a much different design. Design and construction The components of ''Multnomah'' were manufactured in the eastern United States, then shipped to Oregon City, Oregon around Cape Horn on the bark ''Success''. At that time, there were no locks at Willamette Falls, so it was important to determine whether a boat would be built above or below the falls. In the case of ''Multnomah'', the vessel was assembled at Canemah, a settlement above the falls. This allowed the vessel to run on the upper Willamette, running south from Canemah through the Willamette Valley. Ellendale, Oregon
Ellendale is a ghost town in Polk County, Oregon, United States, about two and a half miles west of Dallas. It was the first settlement in present-day Polk County by non-Kalapuyans. The community's name changed over the years, with the first post office in Polk County being opened in this locality as "O'Neils Mills" in 1850. The post office was renamed "Nesmiths" (Or "Nesmiths Mills") in 1850 and discontinued in 1852. The community was eventually renamed Ellendale. History James A. O'Neil built the county's first gristmill at the confluence of La Creole Creek (now Rickreall Creek) and O'Neils Creek over the winter of 1844–1845. Polk County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of the 2020 census, the population was 87,433. The county seat is Dallas. The county is named for James Knox Polk, the 11th president of the United States.
