Richard Von Mises Prize
The Richard von Mises Prize is awarded annually by the Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik, International Association of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM). Since its inception in 1989, the award is given to a young scientist (not older than 36) for outstanding scientific achievements in the field of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics. The prize is presented during the opening ceremony of the GAMM Annual Meeting where the winner will present his research in a plenary talk. The prize aims to reward and encourage young scientists whose research represents a major advancement in the field of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics. Richard von Mises was an Austrian-American mathematician who worked among others on numerical mathematics, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, statistics and probability theory. Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik ("Society of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics"), often referred to by the acronym GAMM, is a German society for the promotion of science, founded in 1922 by the physicist Ludwig Prandtl and the mathematician Richard von Mises. Ulisse Stefanelli is an Italian mathematician. He is currently professor at the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Vienna. His research focuses on calculus of variations, partial differential equations, and materials science. Biography Stefanelli obtained his PhD under the guidance of in 2003 at the University of Pavia. He holds a ''Researcher'' position at the Istituto di Matematica Applicata e Tecnologie Informatiche E. Magenes of the National Research Council (Italy) in Pavia since 2001. In 2013 he has been appointed to the chair of Applied Mathematics and Modeling at the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Vienna.
