Richard Williams (cricketer, Born 1957)
Richard Grenville Williams is a Welsh former cricketer active from 1974 to 1992 who played for Northamptonshire (Northants). He was born in Bangor, Caernarvonshire on 10 August 1957. He appeared in 284 first-class matches as a righthanded batsman who bowled off spin. He scored 11,817 runs with a highest score of 175 not out, one of eighteen centuries, and took 376 wickets with a best performance of seven for 73. A highlight of his career was winning the 1980 Benson & Hedges Cup with Northamptonshire. Williams was man of the match in the semi-final, scoring 73 not out and taking two for 24 against Middlesex. He was less fortunate in 1987 when the county lost narrowly in the final of the same tournament to Yorkshire, in spite of Williams taking three wickets and sharing a partnership of 120 with David Capel. Northamptonshire County Cricket Club
Northamptonshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Northamptonshire. Its limited overs team is called the Northants Steelbacks – a reference to the Northamptonshire Regiment which was formed in 1881. The name was supposedly a tribute to the soldiers' apparent indifference to the harsh discipline imposed by their officers. Founded in 1878, Northamptonshire (Northants) held minor status at first but was a prominent member of the early Minor Counties Championship during the 1890s. In 1905, the club joined the County Championship and was elevated to first-class status, since when the team have played in every top-level domestic cricket competition in England. The Friends Provident Trophy was a one-day cricket competition in the United Kingdom. It was one of the four tournaments in which the eighteen first-class cricket, first-class counties competed each season. They were joined by teams from Scottish cricket team, Scotland and Irish cricket team, Ireland. Lancashire County Cricket Club, Lancashire won the title a record seven times. The competition has previously been known as the C&G Trophy (2000–2006), the NatWest Trophy (1981–2000) and the Gillette Cup (1963–1980). David Capel
David John Capel (6 February 19632 September 2020) was an English cricketer who played for Northamptonshire County Cricket Club and the English cricket team. Cricket writer Colin Bateman noted that "Capel was one of those unfortunate cricketers who became tagged as being the next all-rounder to fill Ian Botham's boots". He was well known for his long stint with Northamptonshire as a player as well as coach for nearly 32 years. He was regarded as one of the icons of the Northamptonshire club. He died on 2 September 2020, at the age of 57, after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2018. Playing career An irrepressible enthusiast, Capel was a batsman who bowled but, because of his dual role, found himself pushed down the order.
