It is distributed in the Australasian realm, Australasian and Indomalayan realm, Indomalayan realms, though some species are also known from the African islands of Madagascar and Seychelles. The Royal Society of South Australia (RSSA) is a learned society whose interest is in science, particularly, but not only, of South Australia. The major aim of the society is the promotion and diffusion of scientific knowledge, particularly in relation to natural sciences. The society was originally the Adelaide Philosophical Society, founded on 10 January 1853. The title "Royal" was granted by Queen Victoria in October 1880 and the society changed its name to its present name at this time. It was incorporated in 1883. It also operates under the banner Science South Australia. History The origins of the Royal Society are related to the South Australian Literary and Scientific Association, founded in August 1834, before the colonisation of South Australia, and whose book collection eventually formed the kernel of the State Library of South Australia. Arthur Mills Lea
Arthur Mills Lea (10 August 1868 – 29 February 1932) was an Australian entomologist. Lea was born in Surry Hills, New South Wales, the second son of Thomas Lea, from Bristol, England, and his wife Cornelia, ''née'' Dumbrell, of Sydney. As a child, Lea was interested in insects and studied them in his spare time. He worked for a chartered accountant firm in Sydney for a while, then became an assistant entomologist for the minister of Agriculture at Sydney in 1891. In 1895 he became government entomologist in Western Australia. Then in 1899 he was appointed government entomologist in Tasmania, where succeeded in controlling Codling Moth. From 1912 to 1924 Lea taught at University of Adelaide; he specialised in the study of beetles. From 1924 he took a 12-month appointment with the government of Fiji to investigate the Levuana moth, a pest attacking copra crops. Proceedings Of The Linnean Society Of New South Wales
The Linnean Society of New South Wales promotes ''the Cultivation and Study of the Science of Natural History in all its Branches'' and was founded in Sydney, New South Wales (Australia) in 1874 and incorporated in 1884. History The Society succeeded the ''Entomological Society of New South Wales'', founded in 1862 which folded in 1872, with James Charles Cox as its first president. The first issue of ''Proceedings'' was in 1875. The establishment of the Society was largely due to the dedication and financial support of its first President, Sir William Macleay. Joseph James Fletcher was director and librarian (this title was afterwards changed to secretary) from 1885 and edited 33 volumes of the ''Proceedings'' of the society. In September 1882, a fire destroyed the library and a part of the scientific material of the society. Thomas Blackburn (entomologist)
Thomas Blackburn (16 March 1844 – 28 May 1912) was an English-born Australian priest and entomologist who specialized in the study of beetles. Born near Liverpool, England, Blackburn became interested in entomology in his youth. At the age of 18, with his brother, he began publishing and editing the periodical ''The Weekly Entomologist''; this ceased publication two years later, after which he became one of the editors of the newly founded ''Entomologist's Monthly Magazine''. In 1866, he entered the University of London, from which he received a B.A. degree in 1868. Ordained a priest of the Church of England in 1870, he served for six years as a parish priest at Greenhithe, Kent. In 1876, Blackburn was transferred to the Hawaiian Islands, where he served as senior priest and chaplain to the bishop of the Church of Hawaii in Honolulu. During his time there, he collected insects extensively on Oahu and also made brief collecting journeys to other islands of the archipelago. "The ... ''Pacific Insects'' was a quarterly peer-reviewed scientific journal published by the Entomology Department at the Bishop Museum from 1959 to 1982.
