Return Of The Rudeboy
Return of the Rudeboy was a photography exhibition created by the photographer and film-maker Dean Chalkley and the Creative Director Harris Elliott. The Exhibition explores the significance of the influential style of " Rude Boy" in the 21st Century first took place in Somerset House in London running from 13 June to 25 August 2014. The subjects of the photographs were more than 60 individuals whose style and swagger, Chalkley and Elliott, felt exemplify an important and rarely documented subculture. It featured the likes of Don Letts (Musician, DJ, Film Director influential in the unification of the punk and reggae scenes), Pauline Black Belinda Magnus (born 23 October 1953), better known as Pauline Black (), is an English singer, actress and author. Dean Chalkley
Dean Chalkley (born 2 April 1968) is a British photographer from Southend-on-Sea. Early life Dean Chakley's first years were spent on a farm in Essex where his parents were labourers. At the age of seven the family moved to Southend-on-Sea where he eventually attended Fairfax High School for boys, in Westcliff-on-Sea. It was the 1980s, the time of the mod revival. Rude Boy
Rude boy, rudeboy, rudie, rudi, and rudy are slang terms that originated in 1960s Jamaican street culture, and that are still used today. In the late 1970s, there was a revival in England of the terms ''rude boy'' and ''rude girl'', among other variations, being used to describe fans of two-tone ska. The use of these terms moved into the more contemporary ska punk movement as well. In the UK, the terms rude boy and rude girl are used in a way similar to gangsta, yardie or badman. Jamaica The term ''rude boy'', and the rude boy subculture, arose from the poorer sections of Kingston, Jamaica, and was associated with violent discontented youths. Don Letts
Donovan "Don" Letts (born 10 January 1956) is a British film director, disc jockey (DJ) and musician. Letts first came to prominence as the videographer for the Clash, directing several of their music videos. In 1984, Letts co-founded the band Big Audio Dynamite with former Clash lead guitarist and co-lead vocalist Mick Jones (The Clash guitarist), Mick Jones, acting as the band's Sampling (music), sampler and videographer before departing the band in 1990. Letts has also directed music videos for Musical Youth, the Psychedelic Furs, Fun Boy Three, the Pretenders and Elvis Costello as well as the feature documentaries ''The Punk Rock Movie'' (1978) and ''The Clash: Westway to the World'' (2000). Pauline Black
Belinda Magnus (born 23 October 1953), better known as Pauline Black (), is an English singer, actress and author. The Selecter
The Selecter are an English 2 tone ska revival band, formed in Coventry, England, in 1979. The Selecter featured a diverse line-up, both in terms of race and gender, initially consisting of Arthur 'Gaps' Hendrickson and Pauline Black on lead vocals, Neol Davies and Compton Amanor on guitar, Desmond Brown on Hammond organ, Charley 'Aitch' Bembridge on drums, and Charley Anderson on bass. The band's name is based on the term "selector", which is a Jamaican word for disc jockey (DJ). The band were one of the most successful ska bands of the 2 tone era, notching up several top forty singles in the British charts. Gary Powell (musician)
Gary Armstrong Powell (born 11 November 1969) is an English drummer. Musical career He is primarily known for being the drummer for English bands The Libertines and Dirty Pretty Things, as well as Guyanese-British reggae musician Eddy Grant. Powell joined The Libertines in 2001 after being introduced to frontmen Carl Barât and Pete Doherty by their then-manager Banny Poostchi. He also played with the New York Dolls for their 2004 reunion shows, Powell has performed at the Isle of Wight Festival, Wireless Festival, T in the Park and Oxygen, as well as playing with Red Hot Chili Peppers. The Libertines
The Libertines are an English rock band, formed in London in 1997 by frontmen Carl Barât (vocals/guitar) and Pete Doherty (vocals/guitar). The band, centred on the songwriting partnership of Barât and Doherty, has also included John Hassall (bass), and Gary Powell (drums) for most of its recording career. The band was part of the garage rock revival and spearheaded the movement in the UK.
