Rete Sicula (Sicilian Network) referred to all the railway lines in operation and under construction in Sicily which, following the 1885 Conventions, was assigned to the Società per le strade ferrate della Sicilia for operation. History The company, formed with mainly foreign capital by a banking group based in Rome, took the place of the previous companies that ran the island railway lines including the failed Vittorio Emanuele Company, which at the time of taking over had not yet completed the construction programme expected. In 1885 the Sicula Network covered a total of 597 km. The network was gradually integrated with the sections from Palermo to Catania and, in 1895, those between Messina and Fiumetorto of the Palermo - Messina line. At the end of 1896 it had reached 1,093 km. In March 1896 the Sicula Network owned 156 steam locomotives, 456 coaches, 90 baggage cars and 2019 goods wagons. Strait Of Messina
The Strait of Messina ( it, Stretto di Messina, Sicilian: Strittu di Missina) is a narrow strait between the eastern tip of Sicily (Punta del Faro) and the western tip of Calabria ( Punta Pezzo) in Southern Italy. It connects the Tyrrhenian Sea to the north with the Ionian Sea to the south, within the central Mediterranean. At its narrowest point, between Torre Faro and Villa San Giovanni, it is wide. At the city of Messina, it is wide. The strait's maximum depth is about . The strait has strong tidal currents that create a unique marine ecosystem. A natural whirlpool in the northern portion of the strait has been linked to the Greek legend of Scylla and Charybdis. Ferrovia Circumetnea
The Ferrovia Circumetnea (roughly translated as ''"Round- Etna Railway"'') is a narrow-gauge, , regional railway line in Sicily. It was constructed between 1895 and 1898. As the name suggests, the line follows a route which almost completely encircles the Mount Etna volcano. From its terminal in Catania the line starts off westward and loops around Mount Etna in a clockwise direction (as seen on the map), eventually reaching the other terminal at the seaside town of Riposto, approximately northeast of Catania. The original terminal was at Catania Porto, although Catania Central (the mainline station) was the last stop for the trains. However, in the 1990s the section from there to Catania Borgo ( long) was converted to standard gauge and moved underground for most of its length for use as a new metro ( Metropolitana di Catania). The Società della Ferrovia Sicula Occidentale (Railway Company of Western Sicily) was established in 1878 to construct a railway between Palermo, Marsala and Trapani. History The company was established in Rome under a notarial deed of 3 September 1878 with a paid-up capital of 22 million lire divided into 44,000 shares. It obtained government approval by Royal Decree of 30 September of the same year. it built and inaugurated the first railway connection between the two cities of Palermo and Trapani in 1881. FS Class 910
FS Class 910 were 2-6-2 tank locomotives designed by Guglielmo Cappa for Rete Sicula where they were registered as RS Class 400. They were absorbed by Italian State Railways (FS) in 1905 and became FS Class 910. History With the conventions of 1885, Rete Sicula took over the lines of Società per le Strade Ferrate Calabro-Sicule and had to face the problems of constructing new lines and introducing modern locomotives. The engineer Guglielmo Cappa designed the Class 400 steam locomotives which were re-registered as FS Class 910 on nationalization in 1905. The locomotive was designed to tackle steeply-graded lines, such as Messina - Palermo with its pass of the Peloritani Mountains and its long tunnel. It also had to be suitable for minor local or commuter services and to have the characteristic of bidirectionality, to gain time at terminal stations by avoiding the need for turntables.
