Victorian Legislative Assembly
The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. History Victoria was proclaimed a Colony on 1 July 1851 separating from the Colony of New South Wales by an act of the British Parliament. The Legislative Assembly was created on 13 March 1856 with the passing of the ''Victorian Electoral Bill'', five years after the creation of the original unicameral Legislative Council. The Assembly first met on 21 November 1856, and consisted of sixty members representing thirty-seven multi and single-member electorates. Electoral District Of Bendigo
The electoral district of Bendigo was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Victoria. Centred on the city of Bendigo, the district was formed when the electorates of Bendigo East and Bendigo West were merged into a single district in 1927. Bendigo was abolished in 1985 when it was once again split into separate East and West districts. Electoral District Of Burwood (Victoria)
The electoral district of Burwood was an electorate for the Victorian Legislative Assembly in Australia. It was located approximately 13 kilometres east of Melbourne, and covered an area of 25 km2. The seat included the suburbs of Ashburton, Ashwood, Box Hill South, Burwood, Chadstone, and parts of Camberwell, Canterbury, Glen Iris, and Surrey Hills. It was created in 1955 as part of the expansion of the Legislative Assembly, and abolished in 1967, replaced by Glen Iris. Burwood was recreated in 1976, replacing Glen Iris. The seat's most notable member was Jeff Kennett, who won the seat on its recreation in 1976 and went on to serve as leader of the Liberal Party from 1982 to 1989 and from 1991 to 1999, and as Premier of Victoria from 1992 to 1999. Campbell Turnbull
Campbell Turnbull (2 October 1898 – 18 April 1977) was an Australian politician. He was born at Wedderburn to farmer Robert Turnbull and Jane Grauzer. After attending state schools he worked for Korong Shire Council until 1914, when he became a railway telegraph operator. He then joined the Crown Law Department, where he studied law and was called to the bar in 1931. On 26 July 1924 he married Marjorie Harriett Whyte, with whom he had two sons. He spent five years as Assistant Crown Solicitor, and specialised in industrial law. From 1952 to 1964 he served on Coburg City Council. In 1955 Turnbull was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Brunswick West. He served until his retirement in 1973, and died at Brighton in 1977. Leo Fennessy
Leo Michael Fennessy (7 June 1907 – 14 February 1992) was an Australian politician. Fennessy was born at Warrnambool to police superintendent Pierce Fennessy and Mary Kenafick. He attended St Thomas' Christian Brothers College at Clifton Hill and became a boot trader in 1922. He also farmed at Trayning, Western Australia, with his brother, until the Great Depression forced them to sell; he mined for gold at Wiluna until 1939, when he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, serving in the Mediterranean and Middle East Theatre from 1942 to 1944. He married Celestine Vosti on 17 February 1940, with whom he had a daughter. On his return in 1944 he was a public servant with the Navy Department until 1950, when he became an industrial officer with the Victorian Federated Clerks' Union. Harold Edward "Harry" Kane (5 July 1903 – 30 May 1962) was an Australian politician. He was born in Wangaratta to estate agent Daniel Kane and Martha Hannah Williams. He attended Essendon High School and worked for the Victorian Primary Producers Co-operative Society until around 19033, when he became a farmer at Diggers Rest and then Gisborne. On 16 December 1934 he married Beryl Irma Sanders, with whom he had three sons. He inherited his father's estate agency, and also served on Broadmeadows Shire Council from 1939 to 1946 (as president from 1945 to 1946). Joseph Henry Smith (17 March 1904 – 2 April 1993) was an Australian politician. He was born in Mansfield to farmer Sidney Gordon Smith and Isabella Martin. He attended state schools and worked on the family farm, and worked briefly for the Electricity Commission before becoming an engine cleaner. In the Great Depression he was unemployed, but he later rejoined the railways and became an engine driver. On 11 August 1934 he married Thelma Duffield, with whom he had two children. He was an active member of the Labor Party and served as chairman of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen. In 1945 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Goulburn. He was defeated in 1947 but re-elected in 1950. From 1952 to 1953 he was Assistant Minister of Lands, and from 1953 to 1955 Minister of Lands, Soldier Settlement and Conservation. John Rossiter
Sir John Frederick Rossiter KBE (17 December 1913 – 18 January 1988) was an Australian politician. Born in Melbourne to public servant James Alexander Rossiter and Sarah (née Nicholas) Rossiter, he attended Middle Park State School, Melbourne High School and the University of Melbourne, studying for his Bachelor of Arts. He then went to Melbourne Teachers' College and taught from 1937 to 1940 before enlisting in the Royal Australian Air Force, in which he served from 1940 to 1946. On 1 March 1939 he married Joan Stewart, with whom he had three children. From 1946 to 1955 he was a senior lecturer in English at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
