Victorian Legislative Assembly
The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. History Victoria was proclaimed a Colony on 1 July 1851 separating from the Colony of New South Wales by an act of the British Parliament. The Legislative Assembly was created on 13 March 1856 with the passing of the ''Victorian Electoral Bill'', five years after the creation of the original unicameral Legislative Council. The Assembly first met on 21 November 1856, and consisted of sixty members representing thirty-seven multi and single-member electorates. The electoral district of Benambra is one of the electoral districts of Victoria, Australia, for the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It covers an area of in north-eastern Victoria. The largest settlement is the city of Wodonga. Benambra also includes the towns of Baranduda, Barnawartha, Beechworth, Chiltern, Corryong, Eskdale, Kiewa, Mitta Mitta, Mount Beauty, Rutherglen, Tallangatta, Tangambalanga, Tawonga, Wahgunyah, and Yackandandah. Harry Kane (politician)
Harold Edward "Harry" Kane (5 July 1903 – 30 May 1962) was an Australian politician. He was born in Wangaratta to estate agent Daniel Kane and Martha Hannah Williams. He attended Essendon High School and worked for the Victorian Primary Producers Co-operative Society until around 19033, when he became a farmer at Diggers Rest and then Gisborne. On 16 December 1934 he married Beryl Irma Sanders, with whom he had three sons. He inherited his father's estate agency, and also served on Broadmeadows Shire Council from 1939 to 1946 (as president from 1945 to 1946). In 1955 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Liberal and Country Party member for Broadmeadows. Joseph Smith (Australian Politician)
Joseph Henry Smith (17 March 1904 – 2 April 1993) was an Australian politician. He was born in Mansfield to farmer Sidney Gordon Smith and Isabella Martin. He attended state schools and worked on the family farm, and worked briefly for the Electricity Commission before becoming an engine cleaner. In the Great Depression he was unemployed, but he later rejoined the railways and became an engine driver. On 11 August 1934 he married Thelma Duffield, with whom he had two children. He was an active member of the Labor Party and served as chairman of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen. In 1945 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Goulburn. He was defeated in 1947 but re-elected in 1950. From 1952 to 1953 he was Assistant Minister of Lands, and from 1953 to 1955 Minister of Lands, Soldier Settlement and Conservation. Ray Tovell
Brigadier Raymond Walter Tovell & Bar, ED (9 March 1890 – 18 June 1966) was an Australian soldier and politician. He was born in Brighton to solicitor Charles Edward Tovell and Mary Annie Mitchell. He attended Brighton Grammar School and qualified as an accountant in 1911. During the First World War, he served with the 4th Brigade, attaining the rank of major and being awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO). After his return, he was a member of the Tovell and Lucas accountancy firm, but remained in the military, as commanding officer of the 14th Battalion from 1924 to 1930, and the 46th Battalion from 1932 to 1938. Sir John Frederick Rossiter KBE (17 December 1913 – 18 January 1988) was an Australian politician. Born in Melbourne to public servant James Alexander Rossiter and Sarah (née Nicholas) Rossiter, he attended Middle Park State School, Melbourne High School and the University of Melbourne, studying for his Bachelor of Arts. He then went to Melbourne Teachers' College and taught from 1937 to 1940 before enlisting in the Royal Australian Air Force, in which he served from 1940 to 1946. Robert John Gray (8 March 1898 – 2 August 1978) was an Australian politician. He was born in Brunswick, Victoria, Brunswick to farmer Matthew Gray and Susan Jane Saggers. He served in World War I with the First Australian Imperial Force, AIF, and after the war studied commerce in London. In 1920 he married Emily Myrtle Ireland, with whom he had four children. He worked for Shire of Nunawading, Nunawading Shire Council and City of Box Hill, Box Hill City Council as a health inspector. Sir George Oswald Reid (22 July 1903 – 18 February 1993) was an Australian politician. He was born in Hawthorn to railway officer George Watson Reid and Lillias Margaret Easton. He attended Camberwell Grammar School and Scotch College, and studied law at Melbourne University and in 1926 was admitted as a barrister and solicitor, practising at the bar until 1927 and as a solicitor thereafter. The electoral district of Box Hill is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, covering an area of in eastern Melbourne. John Stanistreet (7 April 1913 – 30 October 1971) was an Australian politician. He was born in Bendigo to legal manager John Jepson Stanistreet and Maud McIlroy. He attended Bendigo High School and Dookie Agricultural College, and in 1929 began working for his father's accountancy firm. He eventually became principal accountant. On 9 January 1937 he married Glenice Boswell Leed; they had one son. During World War II he served in the Royal Australian Air Force, but was wounded in 1942 and invalided back to Australia in 1943.
