South Australian House Of Assembly
The House of Assembly, or lower house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of South Australia. The other is the Legislative Council. It sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Adelaide. Overview The House of Assembly was created in 1857, when South Australia attained self-government. The development of an elected legislature — although only men could vote — marked a significant change from the prior system, where legislative power was in the hands of the Governor and the Legislative Council, which was appointed by the Governor. In 1895, the House of Assembly granted women the right to vote and stand for election to the legislature. South Australia was the second place in the world to do so after New Zealand in 1893, and the first to allow women to stand for election. Percy Quirke
Percival Hillam Quirke (29 July 1898 – 25 March 1972) was an Australian politician. A farmer and soldier prior to entering politics, Quirke contested the normally safely conservative federal seat of Wakefield in a 1938 by-election as an independent. He finished a distant third on the primary vote, with 22.8 percent behind former Liberal and Country League Premier Richard Layton Butler and Labor challenger Sydney McHugh. However, on the second count, almost 83 percent of his preferences flowed to McHugh, enough for McHugh to decisively defeat Butler with 56 percent of the two-party vote. Quirke later won the South Australian House of Assembly seat of Stanley, serving from 1941 to 1948 as a Labor member. He left Labor in 1948 and continued to contest and win the seat of Stanley as an independent. Tom Casey (Australian Politician)
Thomas Mannix Casey (12 March 1921 – 25 September 2003) was a politician in the State of South Australia. History He was born in Quorn, South Australia, where his father James Casey may have been proprietor of the Hotel Austral, then farmed at "Amelia Park", Peterborough. He was educated at Unley High School. He was chosen the Labor candidate for the seat of Frome in the House of Assembly in November 1960 following the unexpected death of sitting member Mick O'Halloran. Tom was not even a member of the Labor Party, but as a respected local identity was considered to have a better chance of following the idiosyncratic O'Halloran than an outsider from the Union movement. After a redistribution erased his majority and made Frome a notional LCL seat, Casey resigned in May 1970 to contest a Central No. 1 district seat in the Legislative Council. Electoral District Of Frome
Frome is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. It is named after Edward Charles Frome, the third surveyor-general of South Australia. The electorate stretches north-eastwards from the Gawler River and Gulf St Vincent in the south, and includes many of the agricultural areas of the Clare and Gilbert Valleys. It covers a total of and takes in the towns of Auburn, Clare, Mintaro, Port Broughton, Saddleworth, Snowtown and Riverton. Prior to the 2020 redistribution, its main population centre was Port Pirie, since transferred to the Stuart. Flinders is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. It is named after explorer Matthew Flinders, who was responsible for charting most of the state's coastline. It is a 58,901 km² coastal rural electorate encompassing the Eyre Peninsula and the coast along the Nullarbor Plain, based in and around the city of Port Lincoln and contains the District Councils of Ceduna, Cleve, Elliston, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Streaky Bay and Wudinna; as well as the localities of Fowlers Bay, Nullarbor and Yalata in the Pastoral Unincorporated Area. The seat was expanded in 2002 to include a western strip of land all the way to the Western Australia border. John Joseph (Jack) Jennings (6 December 1923 – 28 March 1995) was an Australian politician who represented the South Australian House of Assembly seats of Prospect from 1953 to 1956, Enfield from 1956 to 1970, and Ross Smith from 1970 to 1977 for the Labor Party. Enfield is a single-member electoral district for the South Australian House of Assembly. Named after the suburb of the same name, it is a suburban electorate in Adelaide's inner north, taking in the suburbs of Blair Athol, Broadview, Clearview, Enfield, Kilburn, Lightsview, Northgate, and Sefton Park; and parts of Nailsworth, Northfield and Prospect. Francis Henry Walsh (6 July 1897 – 18 May 1968) was the 34th Premier of South Australia from 10 March 1965 to 1 June 1967, representing the South Australian Branch of the Australian Labor Party. Early life One of eight children, Walsh was born into an Irish Catholic family in O'Halloran Hill, South Australia.
