	Remsen, Iowa Remsen is a city in Plymouth County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,678 at the time of the 2020 census. History Remsen was named for Dr. William Remsen Smith. Smith had a good friend who suggested the name Smithville, but Smith thought that there were too many Smiths in the world, and instead chose to give the town his middle name. Remsen was platted by the Iowa Falls and Sioux City Railroad Town Land and Lot Company August 28, 1876, and was incorporated in the spring of 1889. The population in 1885 was given at 650, of whom 400 were American born. Remsen was settled by mostly German and Luxembourg immigrants. Plagued by religious persecution, unwelcome Prussian military conscription and economic limitations, the early immigrants left their native land to start a new life in the land of opportunity now called Remsen. 	Remsen (village), New York Remsen is a village in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. The Village of Remsen is in the southwestern part of the Town of Remsen. The Remsen Barn Festival of the Arts (FOTA) is held in late September. The first Barn Festival was in 1980. Thousands of visitors attend this yearly event on Main street. The Mohawk, Adirondack and Northern Railroad (MHWA) Railroad crosses the town. Biography Remsen was born in Glen Cove, New York, on Long Island, the son of Helen (née Birchell) and Winfred Herbert Remsen. picture info	Ira Remsen Ira Remsen (February 10, 1846 – March 4, 1927) was an American chemist who discovered the artificial sweetener saccharin along with Constantin Fahlberg. He was the second president of Johns Hopkins University. Early life Ira Remsen was born in New York City on February 10, 1846. He is the son of James Vanderbelt Remsen (1818–1892) and Rosanna Secor (1823–1856). He married Elisabeth Hilleard Mallory on Apr 3, 1875 in New York City, New York. They had two children together. Their son, Ira Mallory Remsen (1876–1928), became a playwright living in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Remsen earned an M.D. from the New York Homeopathic Medical College in 1865. He subsequently studied chemistry in Germany, studying under chemist Wilhelm Rudolph Fittig, receiving a PhD from University of Göttingen in 1870.
