Regional Member Changes To The Senedd
This is a list of Regional Member changes (co-options) to the Senedd (Welsh Parliament; ; formerly the National Assembly of Wales before 2020). Under the provisions of the Government of Wales Act, 1998, regional members of the Senedd who resign, die or are otherwise disqualified are replaced by the next available and willing person of their original party's list, and no by-election occurs. These are the co-options that have occurred since the first elections in 1999. No co-options occurred during the Second Assembly (2003–2007). Government Of Wales Act, 1998
The Government of Wales Act 1998 (c. 38) is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It was passed in 1998 by the Labour government to create a Welsh Assembly, therefore granting Wales a degree of self-government. This legislative body would later come to be known as the Senedd Cymru, or the Welsh Parliament. Background The Act led to the establishment of the National Assembly in 1999, after the 1997 Welsh devolution referendum approved the creation of a devolved Parliament for Wales. South Wales West (National Assembly For Wales Electoral Region)
South Wales West () is an electoral region of the Senedd, consisting of seven constituencies. The region elects 11 members, seven directly elected constituency members and four additional members. The electoral region was first used in 1999, when the National Assembly for Wales was created. Each constituency elects one Member of the Senedd by the first past the post electoral system, and the region as a whole elects four additional or top-up Members of the Senedd, to create a degree of proportional representation. The additional member seats are allocated from closed lists by the D'Hondt method, with constituency results being taken into account in the allocation. Steffan Lewis
Steffan Lewis (30 May 1984 – 11 January 2019) was a Welsh politician, who was elected to the National Assembly for Wales in the 2016 election. He represented the electoral region of South Wales East, as a member of Plaid Cymru. In December 2017, Lewis was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer. He died on 11 January 2019, aged 34. Early life Steffan Lewis was brought up in a bilingual household in Crosskeys and Tredegar. He first attended Swffryd Primary School in Blaenau Gwent before moving to the Welsh-medium primary school Ysgol Gymraeg Cwm Gwyddon in Abercarn and later Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw in Pontypool. He first became interested in politics with the 1995 Islwyn by-election, and became an active Plaid Cymru campaigner at the 1999 Welsh assembly election. Helen Mary Jones
Helen Mary Jones (born 29 June 1960) is a Welsh Plaid Cymru politician, who was a member of the Senedd from 1999 to 2011 and again from August 2018 until 29 April 2021. Background Jones was born in Colchester, Essex. She was educated at Colchester County High School for Girls, Caereinion High School in Powys and the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, where she was awarded an honours degree in history and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education. She has taught in the special education field and has held various positions in youth, community and social work. Jones is dyslexic and dyspraxic, which she did not disclose during her time as an additional needs teacher. She told ''WalesOnline'': "I hid the problem from my colleagues, but not from the kids. Simon Thomas (politician)
Simon George Thomas (born 28 December 1963) is a Welsh former politician who was a member of Plaid Cymru. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Ceredigion from 2000 to 2005, and an Assembly Member in the National Assembly for Wales representing Mid and West Wales between 2011 and 2018. He resigned as an Assembly Member and his party membership on 25 July 2018, following arrest by police on suspicion of possession of indecent images. On 3 October 2018, he pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children. On 31 October 2018 he was given a 26-week jail sentence, suspended for two years. A Member of the European Parliament (MEP) is a person who has been elected to serve as a popular representative in the European Parliament. Mandy Jones (politician)
Mandy Jones is a Welsh politician who was a Member of the Senedd (MS) for North Wales from 2017 to 2021. Jones was elected for the UK Independence Party (UKIP) but sat as an independent politician within the Senedd from early January 2018 until May 2019, when she joined the Brexit Party (Reform UK). In October 2020 she joined the Independent Alliance for Reform group. Background Jones was born in Wolverhampton, West Midlands and worked as a farm contractor and shepherd in north east Wales. Nathan Lee Gill (born 6 July 1973) is a British politician, who was the Leader of Reform UK Wales from March to May 2021, when he resigned from the party. He previously served as Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Wales from 2014 to January 2020. Gill served as a UK Independence Party (UKIP) MEP until his defection on 6 December 2018, and from 2016 to 2017 also an independent Member of the National Assembly for Wales. Eddisbury is a constituency in Cheshire represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2019 by Edward Timpson, a Conservative. From 2015 to 2019 it was represented by Antoinette Sandbach, a former Conservative member who had the whip removed on 3 September 2019 and joined the Liberal Democrats on 31 October 2019. Janet Elizabeth Haworth is a Welsh Conservative politician who was a Member of the Welsh Assembly (AM) for the North Wales Region between 2015 and 2016. Antoinette Geraldine Mackeson-Sandbach (born 15 February 1969), known as Antoinette Sandbach, is a former British politician who was elected as Member of Parliament for Eddisbury in Cheshire at the 2015 general election. The following day, 8 May 2015, she resigned as the Welsh Assembly Member for the North Wales region, having been elected as a North Wales regional Assembly Member at the May 2011 election. First elected as a Conservative, Sandbach had the Conservative whip removed on 3 September 2019 and later lost a vote of no confidence by the Eddisbury Conservative Association.
