Rediscover Botswana was a domestic tourism campaign that ran in Botswana from July 27 to August 22, 2020. It encompassed an 8,000 kilometre tour across various tourist attractions in Botswana. The event was organised and hosted by media personalities Thalefang Charles and Sonny Serite, and it was sponsored by the Botswana Tourism Organisation with support from several tourism associations. The tour began at the Matsieng Footprints and ended at the Dikgosi monuments in Gaborone. Sites were selected to demonstrate diversity among tourist destinations, including "national parks, heritage sites, cultural offerings, and other sites" at various budgets. Rediscover Botswana was carried out in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting decline of international tourism. It was intended to spread awareness of notable places in Botswana and educate citizens about how to best travel domestically. Domestic Tourism
Domestic tourism is tourism involving residents of one country traveling only within that country. Such a vacation is known as a domestic vacation (British: domestic holiday or holiday at home). For large countries with limited skill in foreign languages, for example Russia, Brazil, Canada, Australia, United States, China and India, domestic tourism plays a very large role in the total tourism sector. In British English this may also be called a staycation, a portmanteau of "stay" and "vacation", although this is not to be confused the concept of a vacation in which one stays overnight at their own home. The use of the term "staycation" to refer to a domestic holiday was popularised in the late 2000s by its use in the British media in their reporting of the increase in such tourism during the Great Recession when the weakness in the pound made travel abroad more expensive.
