Red Flag 5400-class Locomotive
The Red Flag 5000-8/1 (붉은기, ''Pulg'ŭn'gi'') is a class of universal mainline electric locomotives built by the Kim Chong-t'ae Electric Locomotive Works for the Korean State Railway. In 1981, the Korean State Railway took delivery of seven Francorail-MTE CSE26-21 diesel locomotives from France, followed by five more in 1985. Due to oil shortages in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it was decided to develop a new electric locomotive based on these diesels. Like all locomotive development in the DPRK, this work was carried out by the Kim Chong-t'ae Electric Locomotive Works in P'yŏngyang. Apparently intended as a replacement for the Red Flag 1-class locomotives, these locomotives, of which at least 41 have been built, incorporate components copied from the original French parts. Kim Chong-tae Electric Locomotive Works
The Kim Chong-t'ae Electric Locomotive Works () in P'yŏngyang is North Korea's largest manufacturer of railway equipment. Established in November 1945 in Sŏsŏng-guyŏk, P'yŏngyang near the P'yŏngyang Railway University and the Korean State Railway's West P'yŏngyang Station, the factory manufactures and overhauls electric and diesel locomotives, passenger cars, streetcars and subway trainsets. It is subordinate to the North Korean Ministry of Railways. History Initially established as a repair facility for rolling stock during the Japanese occupation of Korea, becoming the state-owned West P'yŏngyang Railway Factory on 10 November 1945. In 1960, the facility repaired 210 steam locomotives, 1,800 freight cars and 120 passenger cars. A diesel locomotive is a type of railway locomotive in which the prime mover is a diesel engine. Several types of diesel locomotives have been developed, differing mainly in the means by which mechanical power is conveyed to the driving wheels. The Red Flag 1 ( ko, 붉은기1, ''Pulg'ŭn'gi''-1) and Red Flag 2 (붉은기2, ''Pulg'ŭn'gi''-2) class locomotives are multi-purpose electric locomotives built by the Kim Jong Thae Electric Locomotive Complex and operated by the North Korean State Railway. The Francorail-MTE CSE26-21 is a class of diesel-electric locomotives built in France by the GIE Francorail-MTE consortium between 1981 and 1985. The bogies were made by Creusot-Loire, electric equipment and traction motors by Société MTE, while the bodies were made by Carel et Fouché. They were fitted with American-made ALCO 16-251F engines of 3600 hp (2650 kW), and final assembly was performed by Carel-Fouché. Dynamic braking is the use of an electric traction motor as a generator when slowing a vehicle such as an electric or diesel-electric locomotive. It is termed " rheostatic" if the generated electrical power is dissipated as heat in brake grid resistors, and " regenerative" if the power is returned to the supply line. Francorail was a grouping of French railway rolling stock manufacturers, formed in the early 1970s and defunct by the late 1980s.
