Ray Jones (Queensland Politician)
Raymond Jones (3 February 1926 – 22 April 2000) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Jones was born in Cairns, Queensland, the son of David Jones and his wife Dorothy Edith (née Soilleux). He was educated at Parramatta State School and St Augustines College, both in Cairns. He joined the 51st Battalion Regiment Cadets in 1940 serving with them for a year and in 1942 he was a member of the Volunteer Defence Corps for a year. From 1943 until 1945 he was an air crew trainee with the RAAF. After the war he worked for the Queensland Railways as a porter, shunter and guard. Electoral District Of Cairns
Cairns is an electoral district in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in the state of Queensland, Australia. The division encompasses the central business district and inner-suburbs of Cairns, in Far North Queensland. Major locations include Bungalow, Manoora, Kanimbla, Earlville and Woree. History Created in 1888, Cairns has historically tended to be a safe Labor seat with a blue-collar economy based on sugar, mining and railways. However, in recent decades such industry has been surpassed in importance by tourism and service industries for wealthier retirees and has grown increasingly marginal. This trend culminated in 2012, when Gavin King took the seat for the LNP on a massive swing of over 13 percent, becoming the first conservative to hold the seat since 1904. The seat reverted to its Labor ways in 2015, when Rob Pyne defeated King on a swing slightly larger than the one King picked up three years earlier. Cairns Regional Council
The Cairns Region is a local government area in Far North Queensland, Queensland, Australia, centred on the regional city of Cairns. It was established in 2008 by the amalgamation of the City of Cairns and the Shires of Douglas and Mulgrave. However, following public protest and a referendum in 2013, on 1 January 2014, the Shire of Douglas was de-amalgamated from the Cairns Region and re-established as a separate local government authority. 1983 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 22 October 1983 to elect the 82 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The election resulted in a sixth consecutive term of office for the National Party under Joh Bjelke-Petersen. It was the tenth election win for the National Party in Queensland since it first came to office in 1957. Background The election was triggered when a number of Liberal MLAs, including Welfare Services Minister Terry White, crossed the floor of the Parliament to support a Labor motion to create an Expenditure Review Committee. White was sacked from cabinet for supporting the motion. In response, he launched a party-room coup against Liberal leader and deputy premier Llewellyn Edwards and became Liberal leader with Angus Innes as his deputy. Queensland Parliament
The Parliament of Queensland is the legislature of Queensland, Australia. As provided under the Constitution of Queensland, the Parliament consists of the Monarch of Australia and the Legislative Assembly. It has been the only unicameral state legislature in the country since the upper chamber, the Legislative Council, was abolished in 1922. The Legislative Assembly sits in Parliament House in the state capital, Brisbane. Cairns City Council
The City of Cairns was a local government area centred on the Far North Queensland city of Cairns. Established in 1885, for most of its existence it consisted of approximately around Cairns itself, with much of the metropolitan area being located in the Shire of Mulgrave. The Shire amalgamated into the City on 22 March 1995, as did small sections of neighbouring shires. In 2008, the City amalgamated with the Shire of Douglas to become the Cairns Region. Watty Wallace
George Walter Gordon Wallace (16 January 1900 - 12 October 1964) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Wallace was born in Queensland, the son of Charles Wallace and his wife Minnie (née Collins). He was educated at the Mareeba and Chillagoe primary schools before joining the First Australian Imperial Force in 1916. He had put his age up by two years in order to enlist and saw action in France and Belgium with the 7th and 21st Machine Gun Companies. On his return to Australia he joined the meat industry, working in both Cairns and Gordonvale as a slaughterman and butcher.
