Ravina I
Ravina I (; died c. AD 420) was a Babylonian Jewish Talmudist and rabbi, of the 5th and 6th generation of amoraim. Biography His father seems to have died before he was born or at an early age, and it was necessary for his mother informed him of some of his father's halachic practices. He was a pupil of Rava bar Joseph bar Hama, and his extreme youthfulness at that time is shown by the fact that his teacher designated him and Hama bar Bisa as "dardeki" (children). He frequently addressed questions to Rava, whose sayings he cites. At an early age Ravina was recognized as a teacher, leaving the academy at Mahoza while Rava was still living. Wherever he lived he was recognized as a teacher and judge, and was called upon to render independent decisions. Ravina was on friendly terms with Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak, and was a colleague of Rav Aha b. Rava, with whom he had many disputations on legal questions, Ravina being inclined to lenience and Aha to stringency. Ravina's decisions alwa ...

Mar Son Of Ravina
Mar son of Ravina (Aramaic: מר בריה דרבינא; ''Mar Breih deRavina'') was a Babylonian Jewish rabbi who lived around the late third century (fourth generation of Amoraim). He was not the son of Ravina I or Ravina II (both of whom lived after him), but of a different father having the same name. Practices The Talmud mentions Mar son of Ravina's many unique pious practices. His friend Rav Nachman bar Yitzchak described him as "fearing Heaven" due to his strict practice of the details of halacha and his aspiration to act in a way that would fulfill all halachic opinions. A number of his practices have become accepted halacha to this day, for example: * In situations in which one possesses a full loaf of barley bread and a slice of wheat bread, and wants to know which bread to make the ''Hamotzi'' blessing over, Mar son of Ravina's approach was to place the slice within the full loaf, and make the blessing over the slice and the full loaf simultaneously. * With regards ...

Toronto Ravinas
The Toronto Ravinas / Toronto Falcons were a minor league professional hockey team that competed in the Canadian Professional Hockey League in the 1927–28 season. The team was a minor league affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League. Future Leaf hall-of-famer Joe Primeau was the team's leading scorer. Ex-Leaf Bert Corbeau was also on the team, winding up his professional career in the Canpro league. The Ravinas were coached by Frank J. Selke, who would be hired as assistant to Leafs managing director Conn Smythe in 1929. The Leafs bought the team in February 1928 and renamed them the Falcons. The club initially played its home games at Ravina Gardens in what was then Toronto's west end. Attendance was poor—even the season opener only attracted 1,500 fans—and the Leafs moved the Falcons to Arena Gardens for some games after they purchased the team. The Falcons would also play some home games late in the season in Brantford, Ontario Brantford ( 20 ...

Mark Ravina
Mark Ravina (born 1961) is a scholar of early modern ( Tokugawa) Japanese history and Japanese Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has taught since 2019. He currently holds the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Chair in Japanese Studies. From 1991 to 2019 he taught at Emory University. Outside of academic circles, he is likely most well known for his book ''The Last Samurai: the Life and Battles of Saigō Takamori'', published in 2004. Much of Ravina's scholarly work centers on notions of national identity and state-building in early modern Japan. His book ''Land and Lordship in Early Modern Japan'' (published in 1999) centers on this topic, as do a number of journal articles and talks given by Ravina. He is one of only a few scholars actively working to challenge those who equate the Tokugawa shogunate's authority with the "state" in Japan in this period. Working off of the ideas and terms coined by Takeshi Mizubayashi, Ravina explores the notion of a "compound state ...

Ravina II
Ravina II or Rabina II (Hebrew: רב אבינא בר רב הונא or רבינא האחרון; died 475 CE or 500 CE) was a Babylonian rabbi of the 5th century (seventh and eighth generations of amoraim). He, along with his teacher Rav Ashi, were considered "the end of Hora'ah (teaching)". Traditionally both of them are regarded as responsible for redacting the Babylonian Talmud. Biography Most scholars agree that the rabbi here in question was Ravina the son of R. Huna, and not Ravina the colleague of Rav Ashi who died before Rav Ashi. He did not remember his father, R. Huna, who died while Ravina was still a child, but the Talmud states several times that his mother communicated to him the opinions held by his father. After his father's death, his maternal uncle Ravina I became his guardian. Ravina II officiated as judge at Sura shortly after Rav Ashi's death, and was a colleague of Mar bar Rav Ashi, although he was not so prominent. After Rabbah Tosafa'ah's death, Ravina bec ...
