Rau (surname)
Rau is a surname with several origins. An early form was a nickname for a hairy person, from the Middle High German ''rūch'', ''rūhe'', ''rouch'', meaning hairy, shaggy, or rough. As a surname, it was first found among notable families in Saxony in the 13th century. In medieval England, it was a variant of the given name Ralph. This derived from the Old Norse personal name "Radulfr", composed of the Germanic elements ''rad'' (meaning counsel or advice), and ''wolf'' (wolf). The name became popular after the Norman Conquest of 1066, when the Normans introduced the Old French form, "Raoul", as well as the Norman "Radulf" and "Raulf". The variant form "Rau" was reintroduced into England by French Huguenot refugees in the late 16th century. In Sicily, Italy, it was a variant of the given name Rao. In France, it was a variant form of the surname Rheault, of French or Bretons, Breton origin. People People with the surname include: * Alan S. Rau, American lawyer * B. N. Rau (1887– ...

Rand Afrikaans University
The Rand Afrikaans University (RAU) (Afrikaans: ''Randse Afrikaanse Universiteit'') was a prominent South African institution of higher education and research that served the greater Johannesburg area and surroundings from 1967 to 2004. It has since merged with the Technikon Witwatersrand and two campuses of Vista University to form the University of Johannesburg. History Origins In the two decades after the Second Boer War, the flow of impoverished Afrikaners from the countryside to the Witwatersrand grew without a significant increase in the number of Afrikaans speakers, as is evident from the fact that the congregations of Afrikaans churches in Johannesburg showed almost no growth. That an entire generation of Afrikaners on the Rand was lost and Anglicized during this time was due, among other things, to the lack of Afrikaans educational institutions. The picture only began to change from the 1920s and especially during the Great Depression when the first Afrikaans high sc ...

Royal Agricultural University
The Royal Agricultural University (RAU), formerly the Royal Agricultural College, is a public university in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England. Established in 1845, it was the first agricultural college in the English-speaking world. History The Royal Agricultural University was founded as the Royal Agricultural College in 1842, at a meeting of the Fairford and Cirencester Farmers’ Club. Concerned by the lack of government support for education, Robert Jeffreys-Brown addressed the meeting on "The Advantages of a Specific Education for Agricultural Pursuits". A prospectus was circulated, a general committee was appointed and Henry Bathurst, 4th Earl Bathurst was elected president. Funds were raised by public subscription: much of the support came from the wealthy landowners and farmers of the day, and there was no government support. Construction of the main building, in Victorian Tudor style, began in April 1845 and was designed by S. W. Daukes and John R. Hamilton ...

Rawa People
The Rawa people, also known as Rao or Rau in the Minangkabau language, are an ethnic group originating in Southeast Asia. Many Rawas migrated to Peninsular Malaysia during the 19th century. History It is uncertain whether the Rawas belong to the larger Minangkabau ethnic group. Fathil et al. note controversy but assert that most scholars believe the Rawas are part of the Minangkabau. Genetic analysis indicates a close relationship between the Minangkabau and Rawa peoples. Possible origins of the Rawa people include the district of Rao in Pasaman, Champa in Mainland Southeast Asia, and west of Lake Toba in North Sumatra. C. W. Watson speculated that the Rawa who settled the Peninsular Malaysia in the 19th century were an admixture of the Indigenous people of the upper Rokan River and Kerinci settlers originally from Rawang, North Sumatra. A. C. Milner also notes a second group of Rawas in Jambi and Palembang, referring to this people as the 'Orang Rawa' and the West Sumatra peo ...

Mouth Ulcer
A mouth ulcer (aphtha), or sometimes called a canker sore or salt blister, is an ulcer that occurs on the mucous membrane of the oral cavity. Mouth ulcers are very common, occurring in association with many diseases and by many different mechanisms, but usually there is no serious underlying cause. Rarely, a mouth ulcer that does not heal may be a sign of oral cancer. These ulcers may form individually or multiple ulcers may appear at once (i.e., a "crop" of ulcers). Once formed, an ulcer may be maintained by inflammation and/or secondary infection. The two most common causes of oral ulceration are local trauma (e.g. rubbing from a sharp edge on a broken filling or braces, biting one's lip, etc.) and aphthous stomatitis ("canker sores"), a condition characterized by the recurrent formation of oral ulcers for largely unknown reasons. Mouth ulcers often cause pain and discomfort and may alter the person's choice of food while healing occurs (e.g. avoiding acidic, sugary, salty or sp ...
