Ranahar
''Ranahar'' ( ne, रणहार) is a 2018 Nepali historical fiction novel by Yogesh Raj. It was published on 2 June 2018 by Nepa~laya publications The book won the Madan Puraskar of that year. The book follows the life of Ranajit Malla, the last king of Bhaktapur and his defeat to Prithvi Narayan Shah. The name of the main character is ''Ranajit'' (one who triumphs in the war) whereas ''Ranahar'' means defeat in the war, so the title of the book is a wordplay on the name of the protagonist. Synopsis The book journeys the life of the prince from his childhood to his defeat. The book shows the culture and society of that period. The construction of Nyatapola Temple by his father King Bhupatindra Malla is also a part of the story of the novel. The book also contains lots of words in Nepal Bhasa. Yogesh Raj
Yogesh Raj is a Nepali historian, scholar and writer. He won the Madan Puraskar for his novel ''Ranahar'' in 2018. Biography He has a degree in mechanical engineering and a PhD in the history of science, technology, and medicine from Imperial College, London. He is a polyglot and speaks seven languages (Maithali, Nepali, English, Hindi, Bengali, Nepalbhasa and German). In 2013, he wrote a book based on the death rituals of Hindu Newars titled ''Sandhya Samrachana: Hindu Newarharu ko Mrityu Chetana''. He edited the jail diaries of the martyr Bharat Gopal Jha which was published as ''Uhi Jha: Euta Yuba Sahidko Antim Jail Diary (2018–2020)'' in 2017. He published his first novel ''Ranahar'' in 2018. The Madan Puraskar ( ne, मदन पुरस्कार) is a literary honor in Nepal which Madan Puraskar Guthi confers annually for an outstanding book in the Nepali language published within the calendar year. It is considered the most prestigious literature award in Nepal. It is awarded on the day of Ghatasthapana every year alongside Jagadamba Shree Puraskar. History The award was established by daughter in law of Prime Minister Chandra Shumsher JBR, Queen Jagadamba Kumari Devi, in memory of her husband late General Madan Shumsher JBR, on 26 September 1955. Bhupatindra Malla
Bhupatindra Malla (Nepal Bhasa: ; 3 November 1674 – 19 May 1722) was a Malla Dynasty King of the Kingdom of Bhaktapur (present day Bhaktapur, Nepal) who reigned from 1696 until his death in 1722. He is the most widely known king of Bhaktapur and is among the most popular of the Malla dynasty. He is popularly known in Bhaktapur as ''nepaḥ juju'', meaning the king of the Newars. His reign was characterized by the construction of numerous palaces and temples with the Nyatapola temple being his most revered contribution. This book is based on the life of the activist Yogmaya Neupane. This novel provides an overall understanding of the women's rights movement in Nepal. ''Maharani '' () is a Nepali novel written by Chandra Prakash Baniya. The book was published in 2019 and won Madan Puraskar in the same year. Synopsis The book is a historical fiction based on Chaubisi Rajya and Baise rajya of Nepal. The story is about King Ghanashyam of Parbat and the controversy over his succession by his sons- Malebam and Bhadribam. Malebam is the elder son and has the birthright to the throne whereas Bhadribam was conceived earlier but born later. When Malebam is declared king, Bhadribam revolts while his wife, to everyone's surprise, supports Malebam. In recognition of her efforts to save Parbat, the palace gives her the status of "Maharani".
