Ramón Elices Montes (1844 – ca. 1915) was Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, from 16 July 1886 to May 1887. Rafael De Zárate Y Sequera
Rafael de Zárate y Sequera (ca. 1824 – ca. 1904) was Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, from 11 June 1884 to 16 July 1886. Mayoral term During his two-year mayoral term, Zárate y Sequera is credited with placing fire hydrants along the route from downtown Ponce to its Port at Playa de Ponce and enlarging Calle León further up northbound, both completed in 1884. He is also credited with starting construction of Hospital Civil de Ponce on 4 June 1885. While Zárate Sequera did achieve these goals, the Hospital Civil was not completed, only one of its two wings was. In addition, he had a bad temper and it did not take long before he started to lose the support of both Municipal Council members and the townspeople at large. Given this state of affairs, he presented his resignation to the Governor and, on 16 July 1886 he made the announcement that the Governor had named Elices Montes to replace him. Ermelindo Salazar
Ermelindo Salazar Schuck (ca. 1830 – ca. 1910) was interim Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, from May to 10 July 1887. He filled the mayoral post between the resignation of mayor Ramón Elices Montes and the arrival of Fernando Diez de Ulzurrún y Somellera, who was appointed mayor by the Central Provincial Government. Salazar Schuck was a merchant, landowner and banker, and is best remembered for his majestic residence in downtown Ponce (70 Cristina Street) and which today is home to the Carmen Solá de Pereira Ponce Cultural Center. From 1959 to 1965, the building was the first home of the Museo de Arte de Ponce and from 1991 to 1996 it was the first headquarters of the Museo de la Música Puertorriqueña. Partido Autonomista Puertorriqueño
The Puerto Rican Autonomist Party ( es, Partido Autonomista Puertorriqueño) was a political party in Puerto Rico founded in 1887. The Party was founded in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and its first chairman was Román Baldorioty de Castro. He was followed by Martin Corchado, a prominent physician from Ponce. Juan Hernández López was one of the co-authors of its program in 1897. The Party sought to establish an independent government for Puerto Rico under the Spanish colonial system. The party advocated self-rule, but not independence from Spain. It envisioned decentralized control by Spain, and the strongest possible local government. Teatro La Perla
Teatro La Perla is a historic theater in the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Inaugurated in 1864, it is the second oldest theater of its kind in Puerto Rico, but "the largest and most historic in the Spanish-speaking Caribbean." The theater was named ''La Perla'' in honor of the Virgin of Montserrat (Spanish: ''La Virgen de Montserrat''), known as "The Pearl of the Mediterranean." It is located in barrio Tercero, in the Ponce Historic Zone. Design The theater was designed in the 1860s by Juan Bertoli Calderoni (a Ponceño of Italian heritage resident of the city) and it bears a neoclassical structure with an impressive six-column entrance. The building was badly damaged by the 1918 earthquake. However, it was rebuilt in 1940 using the original plans and reopened in 1941 with better acoustics technology. The Unconditional Spanish Party () was a loyalist conservative political party in Puerto Rico during Spanish colonial times. It was founded in November 1870. The party favored traditionalist assimilation into the political party system of Spain. It purchased the newspaper ''Boletín Mercantil'' to serve as the party's official organ for disseminating its conservative views. Most of its members belonged to the Puerto Rican Volunteers Corps. There were no political parties in Puerto Rico until 1870. This is a list of mayors of Ponce, Puerto Rico's southern economic center, the island's second largest and second most important city. From 1692 to 1840, the office of mayor in Ponce was filled either by local hacendados or by military officers appointed by the governor, depending on whether the political situation on Spain at the time was that of a constitutional or an absolutist government.
