Rafael Romero De Torres
Rafael Romero de Torres (1865, Córdoba - 19 July 1898, Córdoba) was a Spanish painter, from a family of artists. Life and work His father was the painter Rafael Romero Barros. His brothers, Julio and , also became painters. He showed a talent for art an early age, so he was enrolled at the Escuela provincial de Bellas Artes. He was awarded several scholarships, beginning in 1884 with one from the , which enabled him to enroll at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. There, he studied sculpture as well as painting. Winning several prizes encouraged him to extend his stay there. In 1885, he was presented with a second scholarship from the Diputación, for his painting ''Sin trabajo'' ("Out of Work", or "Unemployed"), which provided him with sufficient funds to spend three years in Rome. Rafael Romero Barros (30 May 1832, Moguer - 2 December 1895, Córdoba) was a Spanish painter who often worked in the Costumbrismo style. His youngest son was the painter Julio Romero de Torres. Biography He was born into a humble working-class family. When he was only a few months old, his parents moved to Seville to find employment. At the age of twelve, he began to study at the "Universidad Literaria de Sevilla", where he showed some talent as a writer, producing works on art and literature. It was also there that he had his first art lessons and became serious about an artistic career. Raphael and the English landscape painters were among his first influences. Julio Romero de Torres (9 November 1874 – 10 May 1930) was a Spanish painter. His brothers, Rafael and , also became painters. Biography He was the son of Rafael Romero Barros, a painter who served as Director of the Fine Arts Museum of Córdoba. When he was only ten, he began his apprenticeship with his father at the School Of Fine Arts. His first known works, ''Head of an Arab'' and ''On Horseback'', date from 1889. Two years later, he was providing illustrations for the ''. In 1895, he had his first showing; at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts, where he received honorable mention. Although he attempted to win a scholarship to the , in 1897, he was unsuccessful. The following year, his brother Rafael died, aged only thirty-three. The Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (RABASF; ), located on the Calle de Alcalá in the heart of Madrid, currently functions as a museum and gallery. Life Santa María was born into a religious family with strong religious views. His full name was Marceliano Santa María Sedano, although he always signed as Marceliano Santa María. The National Exhibition of Fine Arts (Spanish: Exposiciones Nacionales de Bellas Artes) was a regular event that took place in Spain from 1856 to 1968; usually in Madrid. These exhibitions were in the form of a competition, established by a Royal Decree from Queen Isabella II in 1853. It was the largest official exhibition of Spanish art. It was initially divided into five categories: Painting, Sculpture, Engraving, Architecture, and Decorative Arts. Painting was always considered the most prestigious category, however, and Decorative Arts was only occasional. Although the decree specified that they were to be held biennale, biennially, this was not always strictly observed.
