Raahe '99
''Raahe '99 (For Paul Rutherford)'' is a live album by trombonist Paul Rutherford and saxophonist George Haslam on which they are accompanied by members of the Samuli Mikkonen Trio, featuring pianist Mikkonen, bassist Ulf Krokfors, and drummer Mika Kallio. Consisting of a single continuous set lasting nearly an hour, it was recorded on July 31, 1999, at the Raahen Rantajatsit (Jazz on the Beach) Festival in Raahe, Finland, and was released in 2012 by Slam Productions. Reception In a review for ''The Free Jazz Collective'', Daniel Sorrells wrote: "''Raahe '99'' is a completely satisfying piece of music, and a damn lucky find. It's painful to think that a great capture like this might have been lost for good, spirited away along with one of its creators. Paul Rutherford (trombonist)
Paul William Rutherford (29 February 1940 – 5 August 2007) was an English free improvising trombonist. Biography Born in Greenwich, South East London, England, Rutherford initially played saxophone but switched to trombone. During the 1960s, he taught at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. In 1970, Rutherford, guitarist Derek Bailey and bassist Barry Guy formed the improvising group Iskra 1903, which lasted until 1973. The formation was documented on a double album from Incus, later reissued with much bonus material on the three-CD set ''Chapter One'' (Emanem, 2000). A film soundtrack was separately released as ''Buzz Soundtrack''. Iskra 1903 was one of the earliest free improvising groups to omit a drummer/percussionist, permitting the players to explore a range of textures and dynamics which set it apart from such other contemporary improvising ensembles as SME and AMM. Raahe
Raahe (; sv, Brahestad; ) is a town and municipality of Finland. Founded by Swedish statesman and Governor General of Finland Count Per Brahe the Younger in 1649, it is one of 10 historic wooden towns (or town centers) remaining in Finland. Examples of other Finnish historic wooden towns are Kaskinen (Kaskö), Old Rauma, Porvoo (Borgå), Jakobstad (Pietarsaari), and Vaasa (Vasa). Free Jazz
Free jazz is an experimental approach to jazz improvisation that developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s when musicians attempted to change or break down jazz conventions, such as regular tempos, tones, and chord changes. Musicians during this period believed that the bebop, hard bop, and modal jazz that had been played before them was too limiting. They became preoccupied with creating something new and exploring new directions. The term "free jazz" has often been combined with or substituted for the term "avant-garde jazz". Europeans tend to favor the term "free improvisation". Others have used "modern jazz", "creative music", and "art music". The ambiguity of free jazz presents problems of definition. Although it is usually played by small groups or individuals, free jazz big bands have existed. Tetralogy (album)
''Tetralogy'' is a two-CD live album by trombonist Paul Rutherford. Drawn from archival tapes, it was recorded in 1978, 1981, and 1982, in London and Pisa, and was released in 2009 by Emanem Records. The album presents Rutherford in a variety of contexts: two solos, one with electronics, and one without; a brass quartet that features trombonist George E. Lewis, French hornist Martin Mayes, and tubist Melvyn Poore; and a trio with bassist Paul Rogers and drummer Nigel Morris. Reception In a review for '' All About Jazz'', John Eyles called the album "One of 2009's very best," and stated that the tracks "give a good impression of Rutherford's talents and the breadth of his musical vision... Listening to this moving music, it is like he is still with us." ''The Conscience'' is a live album by trombonist Paul Rutherford and drummer Sabu Toyozumi. It was recorded on October 11, 1999, at Café Jumbo in Tokoname, Aichi, Japan, and was released in 2017 by NoBusiness Records as part of their Chap Chap series, created in collaboration with the Japanese label of the same name. ''All About Jazz'' is a website established by Michael Ricci in 1995. A volunteer staff publishes news, album reviews, articles, videos, and listings of concerts and other events having to do with jazz. Ricci maintains a related site, ''Jazz Near You'', about local concerts and events. The Jazz Journalists Association voted ''All About Jazz'' Best Website Covering Jazz for thirteen consecutive years between 2003 and 2015, when the category was retired. In 2015, Ricci said the site received a peak of 1.3 million readers per month in 2007. Another source said that the site has over 500,000 readers around the world. Ricci was born in Philadelphia. He heard classical and jazz from his father's music collection. He played trumpet and went to his first jazz concert when he was eight. ''The New York City Jazz Record'' is a monthly New York City based publication that includes features, reviews and concert announcements regarding jazz music. It is available in print form (black and white hardcopy) as well as online at www.nycjazzrecord.com (in full color).
