RM Turnchapel
Royal Marines Turnchapel is a former Royal Marines military installation in South Devon located east of Plymouth, Devon, and north east of Torpoint, Cornwall, England. History The site was established as a shipyard in the 17th century and expanded rapidly under the ownership of John Parker, 1st Earl of Morley in the 1790s. The Admiralty acquired the site in 1903 and used it as a naval oil fuel depot until it was badly damaged by aerial bombing in 1940 during the Second World War. The slipway was used as an embarkation point by troops of the US 29th Division boarding LSTs for the Normandy landings in June 1944. The site became a Royal Marines base in 1993 and went on to become the home of 539 Assault Squadron RM 539 Raiding Squadron (539 RS) is 3 Commando Brigade's integral operational amphibious movement capability, delivering them on to land from water and patrolling waterways. Hooe, Plymouth
Hooe is a suburb of Plymstock, Plymouth in the English county of Devon. History Hooe was built over the site of the estate of Radford, the family seat of the Harris family. Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales from 1870 to 1872 describes Hooe as follows: Geography Hooe is situated adjacent to the estuary of the River Plym. It consists of two areas, Higher Hooe and Lower Hooe. Lower Hooe includes the area near Hooe Lake and the old barn from the former Hooe Barton Farm which was demolished in 1969. Areas around Hooe include Radford to the east, Turnchapel to the north-west, and Jennycliff Bay to the west. Hooe has woodland and farmland to the south. 539 Assault Squadron RM
539 Raiding Squadron (539 RS) is 3 Commando Brigade's integral operational amphibious movement capability, delivering them on to land from water and patrolling waterways. It forms part of 47 Commando (Raiding Group) Royal Marines. The Squadron are based in the new Royal Marines Tamar complex at the northern end of HMNB Devonport. History 539 ASRM was formed on 2 April 1984 and commissioned as operational on 24 July 1984. This was in direct response to lessons learned during the Falklands Conflict in 1982. More recent operations include Operation Telic. 539 ASRM supported 3 Commando Brigade as it took the Al-Faw Peninsula, carrying out numerous operations such as several landings and the clearing of various waterways. 539 ASRM continued to operate in Iraq, performing security patrols of Iraq's southern ports and water networks until the end of Operation Telic. Normandy Landings
The Normandy landings were the landing operations and associated airborne operations on Tuesday, 6 June 1944 of the Allied invasion of Normandy in Operation Overlord during World War II. Codenamed Operation Neptune and often referred to as D-Day, it was the largest seaborne invasion in history. The operation began the liberation of France (and later western Europe) and laid the foundations of the Allied victory on the Western Front. Planning for the operation began in 1943. In the months leading up to the invasion, the Allies conducted a substantial military deception, codenamed Operation Bodyguard, to mislead the Germans as to the date and location of the main Allied landings. Landing Ship, Tank
Landing Ship, Tank (LST), or tank landing ship, is the naval designation for ships first developed during World War II (1939–1945) to support amphibious operations by carrying tanks, vehicles, cargo, and landing troops directly onto shore with no docks or piers. This enabled amphibious assaults on almost any beach. The LST had a highly specialized design that enabled ocean crossings as well as shore groundings. The bow had a large door that could open, deploy a ramp and unload vehicles. The LST had a flat keel that allowed the ship to be beached and stay upright. The twin propellers and rudders had protection from grounding. The LSTs served across the globe during World War II including in the Pacific War and in the European theatre. The 29th Infantry Division (29th ID), also known as the "Blue and Gray Division", is an infantry division (military), division of the United States Army based in Fort Belvoir, Virginia. It is currently a formation (military), formation of the U.S. Army National Guard and contains units from Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and West Virginia. Formed in 1917, the division deployed to France as a part of the American Expeditionary Force during World War I.
