2019–20 Eerste Klasse
The 2019–20 Eerste Klasse season was a season of the Eerste Klasse. Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic On 12 March 2020, all football leagues were suspended until 31 March as the Dutch government forbade events due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the Netherlands. On 15 March this period was extended until 6 April. Due to the decision of the Dutch government to forbid all gatherings and events until 1 June 2020, this period was even further extended. Eventually, on 31 March 2020, the KNVB decided not to resume competitions at the amateur level. They also decided, for those competitions involved, there would be no final standings, and therefore no champions, initially no promotions and no relegations. All teams will start next season at the same level as they did this season. Huissen
Huissen () is a city with city rights in the Netherlands, in the province of Gelderland. The town is located in the Betuwe region and belongs to the municipality of Lingewaard, in the area between the major cities of Arnhem and Nijmegen. Huissen is situated along the rivers Nederrijn and Linge. The city has a population of 19,414 (as of 1 January 2020). History Huissen was first mentioned in 814 as ''Hosenheim''. It received city rights in 1314. The town was part of the Duchy of Cleves and became Dutch in as late as 1816. Much of the town was destroyed in World War II. After the war it was rebuilt in the Traditionalist style. Huissen was previously a municipality of its own, but merged with the former municipalities Bemmel and Gendt in 2001, to form the municipality of Lingewaard. The Vierde Divisie, formerly known as Hoofdklasse () is the second-highest league of amateur football in the Netherlands, and the fifth tier in general. Background The league is divided into two sections: Saturday and Sunday. This is a result of the traditional pillarisation ( nl, verzuiling), the segregation of Dutch society. The ''Saturday'' clubs are mainly Protestant Christian clubs, who were not allowed to play on Sunday. The ''Sunday'' clubs were in general Catholic and working class clubs, whose players had to work on Saturday and therefore could only play on Sunday. Although the pillarisation ended in the 1960s and 1970s, the clubs and the league have maintained this division.
