They are designated with the letter "R" followed by a three-digit number. They serve as feeders connecting smaller towns to the national and provincial routes. Designation as a regional road does not necessarily imply any particular size of road; they range from gravel roads (like the R340 between Plettenberg Bay and Uniondale) to multi-lane freeways (like the R300 near Cape Town). Although most regional roads are maintained by provincial road authorities, this is not universally the case; in provinces which lack capacity, some may be under the control of the National Roads Agency (SANRAL), and in urban areas they may be ordinary streets under the control of the municipal roads department. N12 (South Africa)
The N12 is a national route in South Africa which runs from George through Beaufort West, Kimberley, Klerksdorp and Johannesburg to eMalahleni. It is the only other National Route after the N1 Route that connects the Western Cape Province with the Gauteng Province. Prior to 1971, the N12 from Johannesburg to Three Sisters was known as the N13. Route Summary The road starts in George in the Western Cape and ends in eMalahleni in Mpumalanga. The road runs roughly from south to north, however, once it passes Kimberley in the Northern Cape, it gradually turns eastward. Only the section between Soweto and eMalahleni is a limited access dual motorway. The section between Klerksdorp and Potchefstroom is a dual carriage highway. Strydenburg is a town in the east of the Northern Cape province in South Africa. Seventy-seven km north of Britstown, it was laid out by the Dutch Reformed Church on the farm ''Roodepan'' in 1892. It also lies on the N12, which separates the actual town from its township. The R369 is a Regional Route in South Africa that connects the R357 near Prieska with Colesberg via Hopetown. Route The R369 begins at a junction with the R357 about 35 kilometres east of Prieska. It begins by going eastwards and after about 15 kilometres, it meets the western terminus of the R387. It then continues east for about 90 kilometres to meet the N12 at a staggered intersection in Hopetown. It continues south-east, following the Orange River, to the town of Orania, before again intersecting with the R387, this time at its eastern terminus. The route continues south-east and becomes co-signed with the R48 southwards for 19 kilometres. While co-signed with the R48, it bypasses Vanderkloof to the west and passes through Petrusville. Orania () is an Afrikaner separatist town founded by Afrikaners in South Africa. It is located along the Orange River in the Karoo region of the Northern Cape province. The town is split in two halves by the R369 road, and is from Cape Town and from Pretoria. Its climate is semi-arid. The town and its mono-ethnic and monoculturalist ideals have been the subject of much press coverage, most of it negative. The town was founded with the goal of creating a stronghold for the Afrikaner minority group, the Afrikaans language and the Afrikaner culture through the creation of a white Afrikaner ethnostate known as a Volkstaat.
