R. Greer Cheeseman III
Robert "Greer" Cheeseman III (born February 10, 1955) is the current director of The University of Pennsylvania Band. He served as assistant director to the band following his graduation from Penn in 1977 and was promoted to director in 1994. Greer is one of the originators of the toast throwing tradition at Penn. While a student, he was inspired by the Rocky Horror Picture Show tradition of throwing toast at the screen when Dr. Frank N. Furter asks for "a toast to absent friends". At the end of the third quarter of every home football game the band plays the school song "Drink a Highball", whose final line is "Here's a toast to dear old Penn." Greer and his friends began throwing toast onto the field while singing "Drink a Highball" and the tradition has lived on ever since. The University of Pennsylvania Band (commonly known as the Penn Band, or its vaudeville-esque performance name The Huge, the Enormous, the Well-Endowed, Undefeated, Ivy-League Champion, University of Pennsylvania Oxymoronic Fighting Quaker Marching Band) is among the most active collegiate band programs in the U.S.Images of America: The University of Pennsylvania Band (2006) (Arcadia Publishing) The organization is a part of the Department of Athletics at the University of Pennsylvania. Like most of the other 50 performing arts groups on the Penn Campus, it has no affiliation with any academic department and is sponsored by the Vice Provost's Office for Undergraduate Life. Alpha Chi Rho (), commonly known as Crows, Crow, or AXP, is a men's collegiate fraternity founded on June 4, 1895, at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, by the Reverend Paul Ziegler, his son Carl Ziegler, and Carl's friends William H. Rouse, Herbert T. Sherriff and William A.D. Eardeley. It is a charter member of the North American Interfraternity Conference, and its national headquarters is R.B. Stewart National Headquarters, located in Neptune, New Jersey. The symbol of the fraternity is the labarum and men of Alpha Chi Rho are commonly called "Crows."
