''REM'' is the 1988 EP released by the Chicago-based band Green. The EP was titled as such in response to R.E.M.'s release of the album ''Green''. Both tracks were included on the European release of the band's ''Elaine MacKenzie'' album. Green is a rock music, rock group from Chicago. History The group was started by Jeff Lescher (guitar and vocals), John Diamond (bass and backing vocals), and John Valley (drums). This lineup recorded the 1984 four-song EP ''The Name of This Group Is Green'' and the group's 1986 self-titled debut album, which featured 14 songs, including re-recordings of all four songs from the earlier EP. Green established themselves via live shows around Chicago and undertook several national tours with the assistance of manager Cindy Illig. In 1986, Diamond and Valley elected to leave the band as Lescher announced plans for a national tour. Recruited from local music papers and from among their Chicago fan base were new bassist Ken Kurson (who had his own band, Circles, and later fronted The Lilacs (band), The Lilacs), rhythm guitarist Stuart Shea, and drummer Rich Clifton. Pravda Records is an American independent record label based in Chicago, Illinois, United States, representing a diverse roster of indie rock, soul, pop, and experimental artists. History Pravda Records was founded by Kenn Goodman in 1984. Pravda's first release was a five song cassette by The Service entitled ''Foma.'' In 1986, Pravda Records opened a retail store at 3730 N. Clark Street in the storefront of Metro Chicago. Until 1992, the retail store focused on imports and other independent music. Goodman closed the retail store to shift emphasis back to the label and its artists. To date, Pravda Records has over 100 releases in a variety of genres from artists such as Grammy Award-nominated Susan Voelz, Glenn Mercer of The Feelies, and late Motown legend Andre Williams. Iain Burgess
Iain Burgess (24 November 1953 – 11 February 2010) was an English record producer and audio engineer. He helped define the sound of the Chicago post-punk music scene in the 1980s and early 1990s. Burgess worked with a number of key underground bands including: Big Black, Naked Raygun, The Effigies, Rifle Sport, Get Smart!, Ministry, Green, Bloodsport, Pegboy, Poster Children, and Bhopal Stiffs. Burgess was a native of Weymouth, Dorset, England. His "Chicago sound" was described by the ''Chicago Tribune'' as: "built on no-nonsense elements: powerhouse drumming, prominent bass lines, and bold guitars that split the difference between anthemic and anarchic." The ''Chicago Sun-Times'' described it as: "a massive, crunching, live-and-in-your-face sound". It was a sound that influenced Burgess' friend and student Steve Albini. Kenneth Kurson (born 1968) is an American political consultant, writer, journalist, and former musician, who was editor-in-chief of ''The New York Observer'' between 2013 and 2017. In 2020 he was charged by federal prosecutors with cyberstalking and harassment, for which he was pardoned by President Donald Trump in 2021. In February 2022, Kurson pleaded guilty to state misdemeanor criminal charges of attempted eavesdropping and computer trespass related to his divorce. Education and family Kurson was the son of a traveling salesman of motorcycle parts, and once recounted that "some years were good; others we had to sell our piano and all our furniture." He graduated from Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois, in 1986, and is the younger brother of bestselling author Robert Kurson. ''Trouser Press'' was a rock and roll magazine started in New York in 1974 as a mimeographed fanzine by editor/publisher Ira Robbins, fellow fan of the Who Dave Schulps and Karen Rose under the name "Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press" (a reference to a song by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and an acronymic play on the British TV show ''Top of the Pops)''. ''Pravda'' ( rus, Правда, p=ˈpravdə, a=Ru-правда.ogg, "Truth") is a Russian broadsheet newspaper, and was the official newspaper of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, when it was one of the most influential papers in the country with a circulation of 11 million.
