Quite Contrary
''Quite Contrary'' is the seventh studio album, ninth album overall, by American queercore band Pansy Division, it was released on September 9, 2016 by Alternative Tentacles. The cover features cover models Marcus Ewert and Moon Trent, who were the cover models for Pansy Division's 1996 album Wish I'd Taken Pictures. The band has playfully called ''Quite Contrary'' their “grandpa record” -- intended to describe growing older for a generation of gay men whose role models were decimated by AIDS. Chris Lowe
Christopher Sean Lowe (born 4 October 1959) is an English musician, singer and songwriter, and co-founder of the synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys, which he formed with Neil Tennant in 1981. Biography Lowe attended Arnold School, an independent school in his home town Blackpool, Lancashire. Whilst at school, he played trombone in a seven-piece dance band called One Under the Eight that played old-time favourites like " Hello Dolly", " La Bamba" and " Moon River". Lowe's grandfather had been a trombonist and was a member of comedy jazz troupe The Nitwits. Lowe also learned to play the piano. Lowe studied architecture at the University of Liverpool from 1978 but, as he stated on television appearances and in the ''Life in Pop'' documentary, never graduated, due to the formation of Pet Shop Boys. Neil Tennant
Neil Francis Tennant (born 10 July 1954) is an English musician, singer, songwriter and music journalist, and co-founder of the synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys, which he formed with Chris Lowe in 1981. He was a journalist for ''Smash Hits'', and assistant editor for the magazine in the mid-1980s. Tennant coined the phrase imperial phase to describe the period in which a musical artist is regarded to be at their commercial and creative peak simultaneously. "It's a Sin" is a song by English synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys from their second studio album, ''Actually'' (1987). Written by Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant, the song was released on 15 June 1987 as the album's lead single. It became the duo's second number-one single on the UK Singles Chart, spending three weeks atop the chart. Chris Freeman (musician)
Chris Freeman (born Christopher Mark Freeman, August 8, 1961 in Seattle, Washington) is an American bassist, best known as a member of the band Pansy Division. Early life Freeman was born in Seattle and attended Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen, Washington. At school he got beat up routinely and tried to hide his homosexuality. At age 19 he was going to marry a girl that he played in a band with, before breaking it off and admitting he was gay. Pansy Division Freeman eventually left Washington and moved to San Francisco. In 1991 he met Jon Ginoli through an ad Ginoli placed in the San Francisco Weekly looking for "gay musicians into the Ramones, Buzzcocks and early Beatles". With Freeman playing bass, and Ginoli guitar, Pansy Division went through a series of drummers before settling on Luis Illades, who has been in the band since 1996. Jon Ginoli
Jon Latimer Ginoli (born in Peoria, Illinois) is an American guitarist. He is best known as a member of the band Pansy Division, which was founded by Ginoli and Chris Freeman in 1991. Pansy Division is known as one of the founding examples of the queercore genre of punk rock. He is openly gay. Ginoli, with Pansy Division, was featured in the 1997 documentary film ''Queercore: A Punk-U-Mentary'' by Scott Treleaven; as an actor, in the 2002 comedy short ''Going West'' by Michael Mew; and in the 2008 film ''Pansy Division: Life in a Gay Rock Band'' by Michael Carmona. Marcus Ewert, previously known as Mark Ewert, is an American writer, actor and director, living in San Francisco. Ewert began making and appearing in films in the 1990s. He has appeared in the Gus Van Sant short film ''Four Naked Boys and a Gun'', in Sadie Benning's ''Flat Is Beautiful'', and the movie '' Frisk'' by Todd Verow. In 2008, the feature film ''The Lollipop Generation'' by G.B. Jones was released starring Mark Ewert in a lead role, alongside Jena von Brucker, Vaginal Davis, Calvin Johnson, Joel Gibb and Scott Treleaven. Queercore
Queercore (or homocore) is a cultural/social movement that began in the mid-1980s as an offshoot of the punk subculture and a music genre that comes from punk rock. It is distinguished by its discontent with society in general, and specifically society's disapproval of the LGBT community. Queercore expresses itself in a DIY style through magazines, music, writing and film. As a music genre, it may be distinguished by lyrics exploring themes of prejudice and dealing with issues such as sexual identity, gender identity and the rights of the individual; more generally, queercore bands offer a critique of society endemic to their position within it, sometimes in a light-hearted way, sometimes seriously.
