Quiet American (April 29, 1986 – October 14, 2016) was an American thoroughbred racehorse foaled in Florida. He is out of the Dr. Fager mare Demure, by the Grade I winner Fappiano, son of Mr. Prospector. Purchased for $300,000 as a yearling at the 1987 Fall Fasig-Tipton Tartan Stable Dispersal Sale by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Quiet American was very lightly raced at 2 and 3 and didn't come into his own until age 4, where he won both the NYRA Mile and the San Diego Handicap. Stud career Retired to stud at Darley Stud in 1992, Quiet American produced multiple stakes winners, with the most famous being Kentucky Derby winner Real Quiet. In total he has sired over 50 stakes winners with a cumulative earnings of $57 million. The Quiet American
''The Quiet American'' is a 1955 novel by English author Graham Greene. Narrated in the first person by journalist Thomas Fowler, the novel depicts the breakdown of French colonialism in Vietnam and early American involvement in the Vietnam War. A subplot concerns a love triangle between Fowler, an American CIA agent named Alden Pyle, and Phuong, a young Vietnamese woman. The novel implicitly questions the foundations of growing American involvement in Vietnam in the 1950s, exploring the subject through links among its three main characters – Fowler, Pyle and Phuong. The novel has received much attention due to its prediction of the outcome of the Vietnam War and subsequent American foreign policy since the 1950s. Greene portrays Pyle as so blinded by American exceptionalism that he cannot see the calamities he brings upon the Vietnamese. ''The Quiet American'' is a 1958 American drama romance thriller war film and the first film adaptation of Graham Greene's bestselling 1955 novel of the same name,Phillips, Richard"A haunting portrait of US-backed terror in 1950s Vietnam" World Socialist Web Site, 2002 and one of the first films to deal with the geo-politics of Indochina. It was written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, and stars Audie Murphy, Michael Redgrave, and Giorgia Moll. It was critically well-received, but was not considered a box office success. The film flips the novel on its head, turning a cautionary tale about foreign intervention into anticommunist advocacy of American power. In writing the script, Mankiewicz received uncredited input from CIA officer Edward Lansdale, who was often said to be the actual inspiration for the American character—called "Pyle" in the novel but unnamed in this film—played by Murphy.
