Queensway Base is the headquarters that is home to the Special Operations Command (SOC), a front line department of the Singapore Police Force (SPF). It is situated directly across Queensway, and was formerly the Old Queenstown Police Station. Special Operations Command (Singapore)
The Special Operations Command (SOC) is a specialist police tactical unit of the Singapore Police Force (SPF) specialising in riot control and high-threat incidents. It was formed on 10 September 1992 to unify specialist units into a single strategic reserve force that the regular officers need to call upon in any contingency plan and serious case of public disorder. The current commander of the SOC is Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Arthur Law Kok Leong and the deputy commander is Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Tan Kiat Hee. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) is the national and principal law enforcement agency responsible for the prevention of crime and law enforcement in the Republic of Singapore. The Police National Service Full-time Light Strike Force (PNSF LSF) was part of Special Operations Command, a division of Singapore Police Force, located at Queensway Base in Singapore from 1998 to 2005. History and nature The Police Full-time LSF was established in June 1998. In the beginning, there were 4 squads, namely LSF A, LSF B, LSF C and LSF D. Each squad consisted of at least 20 men then, led by a senior officer holding a rank of inspector or above. He was assisted by a National Service Inspector (NSI). Police Tactical Unit (Singapore)
The Police Tactical Unit (PTU) is a paramilitary specialist unit of the Singapore Police Force and comes under the direct command of the Special Operations Command. Based in Queenstown, it is the main anti-rioting and disaster-management unit of the police force. They are also called upon to handle cases of serious crime in progress, particularly cases involving firearms. From 2004, PTU officers also presented greater public prominence when they conducted patrols in public areas, such as at Orchard Road, Holland Village and Serangoon Gardens Estate, partly as a response to greater terrorism concerns. The Special Tactics and Rescue (STAR) is an elite tactical unit of the Singapore Police Force responsible for conducting counter-terrorism and hostage rescue operations in Singapore. History Founded in March 1978 as the Police Tactical Team, it was a part-time outfit mainly used to contain civil disorder. During its infant days, the Police Tactical Team was a motley crew of volunteer officers from the Police Task Force, who served even on their days off for a monthly allowance of S$50.
