Route 237 is a short 15 km north/south provincial highway on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River in Quebec. Its northern terminus is in Stanbridge East at the junction of Route 202 and its southern terminus is in Frelighsburg, where it crosses the US border and continues past the West Berkshire–Frelighsburg Border Crossing into Vermont as Route 108. Frelighsburg, Quebec
Frelighsburg is a municipality in the Estrie region of southern Quebec, Canada, on the border with Vermont. It is at the foot of Mount Pinnacle, part of the Appalachian Mountains. Administratively, it is within the Brome-Missisquoi Regional County Municipality, in the Estrie. Its population, as of the Canada 2011 Census, was 1,094. History Frelighsburg is on land that was originally inhabited by the Abenaki. It was established as a colony in the late 1790s by American Loyalists, including pioneer Abram Freligh, a physician of German origin who lived in Clinton, New York. The sawmill built by his son in 1839, and several other buildings from the 19th century are considered historical monuments. Bedford () is a city located in the Estrie region of southern Quebec, Canada. The population as of the Canada 2011 Census was 2,684. This small community is just an hour's drive from larger cities such as Burlington and Montreal. History The first settlers arrived in 1812. Origin of the name The name "Bedford" could have been given by Loyalists who knew of several Bedfords back in the former American colonies. The name could also have been a tribute to Lord John Russell, who was the fourth Duke of Bedford (1710–1771), an English politician and Secretary of State (1748–1751), and governor general of Ireland from 1756 to 1761. Geography Berkshire is located in northeastern Franklin County. Its northern boundary is the Canada–United States border. Stanbridge East is a municipality in the Canadian province of Quebec, located within the Brome-Missisquoi Regional County Municipality. The population as of the Canada 2011 Census was 873. History The Township of Stanbridge was first surveyed by Jesse Pennoyer in the year 1792. It was subsequently opened for settlement, reversing the old policy of the day "no settlements along the frontier". In 1997 the township changed its form of government and became Stanbridge East. Vermont Route 108 (VT 108) is a north–south state highway in northern Vermont, United States. Its southern terminus is at VT 100 in Stowe, and its northern terminus is at the Canada–US border in Franklin, where it continues into Quebec past the West Berkshire–Frelighsburg Border Crossing as Route 237. VT 108 is long. Route description VT 108 passes through the area of the Mount Mansfield State Forest. It starts in Stowe and goes through Smugglers' Notch to Jeffersonville. The road cuts through Mount Mansfield. The road is very steep and winding, making it impossible to plow in the winter, so the road is closed between the State Forest access parking lot and Smugglers' Notch Resort, usually from late October until May. West Berkshire–Frelighsburg Border Crossing
The West Berkshire–Frelighsburg Border Crossing connects the town of Frelighsburg, Quebec with the western portion of Berkshire, Vermont on the Canada–United States border. It is reached by Vermont Route 108 on the American side and by Quebec Route 237 on the Canadian side. The US border station at this crossing was built in 1935, and was built as a Works Progress Administration effort to create jobs during the Great Depression, and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
