Quadrastate
''Quadrastate'' is a 12" extended play (EP) by English electronic music group 808 State, released in 1989 on the Creed Records label. It contains the original version of " Pacific State", one of the most popular tracks by 808 State, which later made the band famous after extended airplay on BBC Radio 1 led to the band being signed to major label ZTT Records. On 19 May 2008, the British Rephlex Records label re-released the record in double vinyl and CD format. The re-issued version featured seven additional bonus tracks not included in the original. In addition, there were some alterations to the originally released version, including editing to the track "106". Pacific State (song)
"Pacific" is a single by English electronic music group 808 State, released in 1989. It exists in various mix versions known by different titles, such as "Pacific State" (as included on the ''Quadrastate'' mini-album that year) and "Pacific 202" (as included on the album '' Ninety''). The song charted for 11 weeks in the United Kingdom, peaking at number 10 on the UK Singles Chart. Background and release Gerald Simpson began working on the track before leaving 808 State in 1989, after which it was released and hit the charts. However, according to Simpson, they had finished and released the track without his permission. Although Simpson was credited on its first release on the album ''Quadrastate'' both as a writer and co-producer, the dispute escalated as Simpson claimed to have written the entire track. 808 State are an English electronic music group formed in 1987 in Manchester, taking their name from the Roland TR-808 drum machine. They were formed by Graham Massey, Martin Price and Gerald Simpson. They released their debut album, '' Newbuild'', in September 1988 and secured commercial success in 1989, when their song " Pacific State" was picked up by BBC Radio 1 DJ Gary Davies and charted for 11 weeks in the UK. Newbuild (album)
''Newbuild'' is the debut studio album by English electronic music group 808 State, released in September 1988 by Creed Records. It was the only album recorded with founding member Gerald Simpson, who departed shortly afterward for a solo career. The group recorded the album on tape found discarded outside the BBC's Manchester studios because it did not meet the organization's quality requirements. The album was named after a local council housing project. Release In a 1988 review, '' OffBeat'' described the album as "compulsive stuff, you don't exactly listen to it, more like feeel the frequencies... and respond." In 1999, ''Alternative Press'' called it an "artificial dystopia" in which the tracks "strip away the soul of Detroit techno and replace it with a cold and rhythmic paranoia." ''90'' is the second studio album by British electronic music group 808 State, released on 4 December 1989 as their first album on ZTT Records. The album features the single " Pacific State", which reached number 10 in the UK Singles Chart in November 1989. ''90'' was released in the United States as '' Utd. State 90'', without "The Fat Shadow (Pointy Head Mix)", but with other bonus tracks. '' Slant Magazine'' listed the album at number 54 on its list of the "Best Albums of the 1980s", calling it a "thrilling expansion of the possibilities for acid house and arguably the best LP ever produced in the style". A Guy Called Gerald
Gerald Rydel Simpson (born 16 February 1967), better known as A Guy Called Gerald, is a British record producer and musician. He was an early member of the electronic group 808 State, contributing to their debut LP '' Newbuild'' (1988) and hit single " Pacific State" (1989). He also achieved solo success with his 1988 hit single " Voodoo Ray", which became a touchstone of Manchester's acid house scene and reached No. 12 in the UK charts. He embraced breakbeat production in the 1990s, with his 1995 album '' Black Secret Technology'' becoming a "much-touted candidate for 'best jungle album ever.'" He also ran the London-based independent record label Juice Box Records from 1991 to 1998. The twelve-inch single (often written as 12-inch or 12″) is a type of vinyl ( polyvinyl chloride or PVC) gramophone record that has wider groove spacing and shorter playing time with a 'single' or a few related sound tracks on each surface, compared to LPs (long play) which have several songs on each side. This allows for louder levels to be cut on the disc by the mastering engineer, which in turn gives a wider dynamic range, and thus better sound quality. ZTT Records
ZTT Records is a British record label founded in 1983 by record producer Trevor Horn, Horn's wife and businesswoman Jill Sinclair, and ''New Musical Express'' (NME) journalist Paul Morley. The label's name was also stylised as ZANG TUMB TUUM and ZANG TUUM TUMB on various releases. In December 2017, Universal Music Group (UMG) acquired ZTT Records, along with Stiff Records. The ZTT and Stiff back catalogues were licensed to BMG Rights Management under Union Square Music until 2022, when Universal relaunched the label. Rephlex Records was a record label launched in 1991 in Cornwall by electronic musician Richard D. James (aka Aphex Twin) and Grant Wilson-Claridge. The label coined the term ''braindance'' to describe the output of Aphex Twin and fellow artists. History In 1989, Grant Wilson-Claridge met Richard D. James (a.k.a. Aphex Twin) DJing at The Bowgie, a club located just along the coast from Newquay, Cornwall. Graham Massey
Graham Vernon Massey (born 4 August 1960 in Manchester) is a British record producer, musician, and remixer. Early career He was a member of experimental jazz rock group Biting Tongues, once signed to Factory Records. After recording with the latter he enrolled in a sound engineer course. By 1988, he was a founding member of the British band 808 State. Originally a hip hop group called Hit Squad Manchester, they shifted to an acid house sound for recording their debut album '' Newbuild''. Music 808 State was named after Massey's favourite drum machine, the Roland TR-808. He said he thought Roland drum machines were "severely uncool" when they first appeared. Massey had also been a member of the D.I.Y. band Danny and the Dressmakers, a member of the Manchester punk band Aqua in the latest 1970s (not to be confused with the Danish pop band Aqua from the 1990s), and collaborated with violinist Graham Clark.
