Qinglongqiao Railway Station
Qinglongqiao railway station () (also known as Ching-lung-chiao railway station) is a historic station of Jingbao Railway located in Badaling Town, Yanqing District, Beijing. It was built in 1908, and includes the famous zigzag railway designed by the Chinese railroad engineer Zhan Tianyou (Jeme Tien-Yow). The station also contains the tomb of Zhan Tianyou and a statue of his, along with milestones in Suzhou numerals. Note that there are two stations at Qinglongqiao. In the northbound direction, the Line S2 suburban trains from to & use the western switchback, changing direction in Qinglongqiao West railway station. Only in the southbound direction do the trains use the eastern switchback, reversing at Qinglongqiao railway station. Badaling Town
Badaling Town () is a town on the southwestern part of Yanqing District of Beijing. It borders Kangzhuang and Dayushu Towns to its north, Jingzhuang Town to its east, Nankou Town to its southeast, and Donghuayuan Town to its west. It was home to 10,024 people as of 2020. The name originates from Badaling, a famous section of the Great Wall of China that is located on the south of the town. Geography Badaling Town is at the foothill of Badaling site, with around 70% of the town being mountainous terrain. Beijing–Baotou railway, Badaling Expressway, National Highway 110 and Beijing–Lhasa Expressway all pass through parts of the town. Yanqing District
Yanqing District (), formerly known as Yanqing County before 2015, is a District (China), district of the municipality of Beijing located northwest of the city proper of Beijing. Zig Zag (railway)
A railway zig zag or switchback, is a method of climbing steep gradients with minimal need for tunnels and heavy earthworks. For a short distance (corresponding to the middle leg of the letter "Z"), the direction of travel is reversed, before the original direction is resumed. Some switchbacks do not come in pairs, and the train may then need to travel backwards for a considerable distance. A location on railways constructed by using a zig-zag alignment at which trains must reverse direction to continue is a reversing station. One of the best examples is the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site railway in India, that has six full zig zags and three spirals. Zhan Tianyou
Zhan Tianyou/Chan T'ien-yu (; 26 April 1861 – 24 April 1919), or Jeme Tien-Yow as he called himself in English, based on the Cantonese pronunciation, was a pioneering Chinese railroad engineer. Educated in the United States, he was the chief engineer responsible for construction of the Peking-Kalgan Railway (Beijing to Zhangjiakou), the first railway constructed in China without foreign assistance. For his contributions to railroad engineering in China, Zhan is known as the "Father of China's Railroad". Background Zhan was born in Namhoi (Nanhai) county (now Guangzhou) in Guangdong. His family, which had long participated in business and commerce, came from Wuyuan County in Huizhou, Anhui (now in Jiangxi). The Suzhou numerals, also known as ' (), is a numeral system used in China before the introduction of Arabic numerals. The Suzhou numerals are also known as ' (), ' (), ' (), ' () and ' (). Line S2 (BCR)
Line S2 of Beijing Suburban Railway (BCR) () is a commuter rail line in Beijing. The main line runs from Huangtudian railway station in Changping District to Yanqing railway station in Yanqing District, following the old Beijing–Baotou railway, and provides faster, more frequent and convenient service than preexisting trains. The line is in length (main line + branch line). The train locomotives are marked "Great Wall" (). Stations Operation Trains can reach a maximum speed of . A trip from Huangtudian to the Badaling Great Wall takes about 1 hour and 22 minutes. Since 1 December 2020 there have been five services each way from Friday to Monday and on public holidays.
