Québec-Centre (provincial Electoral District)
Québec-Centre was a former provincial electoral district in the Capitale-Nationale region of Quebec, Canada. It was located in the general area of Quebec City. It elected members to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec. It was created for the 1867 election. Its final election was in 1962. It disappeared in the 1966 election and its successor electoral district was Jean-Talon. Capitale-Nationale
Capitale-Nationale (; en, National Capital region) is one of the 17 List of Quebec regions, administrative regions of Quebec. It is anchored by the provincial capital, Quebec City, and is largely coextensive with that city's Communauté métropolitaine de Québec, metropolitan area. It has a land area of 18,797.45 km2. It reported a total resident population of 729,997 as of the Canada 2016 Census, with Quebec City having 73.7 percent of the total. Victor Châteauvert
Victor Châteauvert (12 March 1841 – 6 November 1920) was a Canadian politician. He married Virginie Dussault. He was associated to Gaspard Lemoine (married to Emma Renaud) in the company J.B. Renaud in Quebec City. He was the unsuccessful Conservative candidate in the 1891 federal election for the riding of Quebec-Centre. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec for the identically-named provincial riding of Québec-Centre in the 1892 Quebec election. Union Nationale (Quebec)
The Union nationale () was a conservative and nationalist provincial political party in Quebec, Canada, that identified with Québécois autonomism. It was created during the Great Depression and held power in Quebec from 1936 to 1939, and from 1944 to 1960 and from 1966 to 1970. The party was founded by Maurice Duplessis, who led it until his death in 1959. The party was often referred to in English as the National Union, especially when it was still an electoral force, by both the media and, at times, the party. History Origin The party started when the Action libérale nationale, a group of dissidents from the Quebec Liberal Party, formed a loose coalition with the Conservative Party of Quebec. Philippe Hamel
Philippe Hamel (October 12, 1884 – January 22, 1954) was a nationalist and progressive politician in Quebec, Canada. Background He was born on October 12, 1884, in Quebec City. His father was Charles-Antoine-Auguste and his mother was Sophie Vallieres. His father was a doctor of medicine at Université Laval and his mothers occupation is unknown Member of the legislature Hamel entered politics with the intention to achieve the nationalization of all privately owned electric companies. Joseph-Octave Samson
Joseph-Octave Samson (9 January 1862 – 10 December 1945) was a Canadian politician, serving as Mayor of Quebec City from March 1920 to March 1926. After working with business interests, including his joint founding of the Samson & Filion Hardware company in 1887, Samson became a Quebec City councillor at the Saint-Pierre ward from 1904 to 1906 and again from 1908 to 1910. Samson was elected mayor of Quebec City on 16 February 1920. During his term as mayor, provincial premier Louis-Alexandre Taschereau accused Samson of faulty city administration. After leaving his post as mayor, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec as a Liberal member for the Québec-Centre riding in 1927. Lawrence Arthur Dumoulin Cannon
Lawrence Arthur Dumoulin Cannon (April 28, 1877 – December 25, 1939) was a Canadian lawyer, politician, and Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. Born in Arthabaska, Quebec, the son of Lawrence John Cannon and Aurélie Dumoulin, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1896 from Université Laval. In 1899 he received an LL.L also from Université Laval. He was called to the Bar in 1899 and practised law. His brother was Lucien Cannon, a politician and cabinet minister. In 1908, he was elected to the City council of Quebec City. In 1916, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec for the riding of Québec-Centre as a Liberal. He was re-elected in 1919 but was defeated in 1923. He returned to private practice until he was appointed to the Court of King's Bench of Quebec in 1927.
