Qeqertarsuaq Island (Karrat Fjord)
Qeqertarsuaq (meaning "Large Island") is an island in Avannaata municipality, located in the Karrat Fjord in northwestern Greenland. Nearby islands are Illorsuit Island and Upernivik Island. The island has a settlement called Nuugaatsiaq. The island has a mountain called Snehætten (meaning Snow hat in Danish), an Ultra prominent peak. Avannaata
Avannaata (, da, Det Nordlige, lit=The Northern) is a municipality of Greenland created on 1 January 2018 from the bulk of the former Qaasuitsup municipality. It encompasses an area of 522,700 km2 and has 10,726 inhabitants. Geography In the south, Avannaata is flanked by the Qeqertalik municipality. In the southeast, it is bordered by the Sermersooq municipality, however this border runs north–south ( 45° West meridian) through the center of the Greenland ice sheet ( kl, Sermersuaq), and as such is free of traffic. In the east and northeast it is bordered by the Northeast Greenland National Park. At the southern end of the municipal coastline are the waters of Disko Bay, although some Disko Bay communities belong to the municipality of Qeqertalik. Karrat Fjord
Karrat Fjord ( da, Karrats Fjord) is a fjord in Avannaata municipality in western Greenland. Geography Karrat Fjord has its mouth in the Nordost Bay of the Baffin Bay. The head of the fjord is formed by a number of tributaries, including the Rink Glacier, Ingia Glacier and Umiamako Glacier fjords, as well as the Ukkusissat Fjord. Nuugaatsiaq
Nuugaatsiaq (old spelling: ''Nûgâtsiaq'') is a settlement in the Avannaata municipality, in northwestern Greenland, located on an island off the southern coast of Sigguup Nunaa peninsula, in the Uummannaq Fjord basin. It had 84 inhabitants in 2010. History On 17 June 2017, a landslide measuring fell about into the Karrak fiord, causing a tsunami that hit Nuugaatsiaq. Four people were killed, nine injured and eleven buildings were washed into the water. In the beginning the tsunami had a height of , but it was significantly lower once it hit the settlement. Initially it was unclear if the landslide was caused by a small earthquake (magnitude 4), but later it was confirmed that the landslide had caused the tremors. The town was largely abandoned following the tsunami. Qeqertarsuaq () is a port and town in Qeqertalik municipality, located on the south coast of Disko Island on the west coast of Greenland. Founded in 1773, the town is now home to a campus of the University of Copenhagen known as Arctic Station. ''Qeqertarsuaq'' is the Kalaallisut name for Disko Island and is also now used for several other islands on Greenland, including those formerly known as Upernavik and Herbert Island.
