The 5000 class are a class of diesel locomotive built by United Group Rail, Broadmeadow for QR National between 2005 and 2007. History In 2004, QR National ordered twelve 5000 class locomotives from United Group Rail. They were a heavy haulage version of the NR class and were purchased to haul coal trains from Mount Arthur coal mine Mount Arthur coal mine is an open cut coal mine located near Muswellbrook, Australia. The NR class are a class of Australian diesel locomotive built by A Goninan & Co for National Rail between 1996 and 1998. They are currently operated by Pacific National. The C44aci model locomotives built by UGL Rail at Broadmeadow adopted the design from the NR Class. Mount Arthur Coal Mine
Mount Arthur coal mine is an open cut coal mine located near Muswellbrook, Australia. Opened by BHP in 2002, it is the largest coal mine in New South Wales. Until 2020 it produced coal for domestic and overseas customers, when it shifted to only produce for overseas customers. In August 2020 BHP announced it intended to sell the mine. Having been unable to find a buyer, in June 2022 BHP announced it would retain the mine and seek to extended its licence from 2026 until 2030 when it would then close. The mine is operated under contract by Thiess. Coal is moved by Aurizon via the Main Northern railway line to the Port of Newcastle for export. Muswellbrook ( ) is a town in the Upper Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia, about north of Sydney and north-west of Newcastle. The Hunter Valley Coal Chain (HVCC) is the chain of coal delivery in New South Wales, Australia from (mainly open-cut) coal mines in the Hunter Region to the Port of Newcastle and domestic coal-fired power stations in the Hunter Valley.
