Pyrohoshcha Dormition Church
The Pyrohoshcha Dormition of the Mother of God Church ( uk, Церква Успіння Богородиці Пирогощої, Tserkva Uspinnia Bohorodytsi Pyrohoshchoyi) or simply Pyrohoshcha Church ( uk, Церква Пирогощі, links=no, {{IPA-uk, ˈtsɛrkwɐ pɪroˈɦɔʃtʃi, IPA) is an Orthodox church in Kyiv in the historical neighbourhood Podil. The original church was built in 1130s by the Mstyslav I the Great of Kyiv. It was the main church of Podil, and was a temporary cathedral of Kyiv Metropolitanate in the early 17 century. In 1613 the church was reconstructured in Renaissance style, and then in 18th-19th centuries was rebuilt in Ukrainian Baroque and Neoclassicism styles. In 1934, the church became the cathedral of Ukrainian Autocephalous Church when its center moved from Kharkiv to Kyiv together with the capital of Ukrainian SSR. Square of Contracts or Contract Square ( uk, Контрактова площа, translit.: ''Kontraktova ploshcha'') is a square in the historic Podil neighborhood of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. The square is an important economic, cultural, and transport center of the Podil, containing numerous architectural and historical monuments. History Contract Square is known since the Kyivan Rus' times as an important part of the Podil merchant neighborhood. The square lies in between the Andriyivskyy Descent, Sahaidachny, Pokrivska, Florivska, Prytisko-Mykilska, Kostiantynivska, Mezhyhirska, Spaska, Skovorody and Ilynska streets. The construction of the Contracts House, a permanent trading center where contracts were signed, at the end of the 18th century gave the square its current name.
