Pymatuning South is a census-designated place (CDP) in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 479 at the 2010 census. Geography Pymatuning South is located near the southwest corner of Crawford County at (41.509668, -80.458999), at the southern end of Pymatuning Reservoir, one of the largest reservoirs in Pennsylvania. The CDP occupies both sides of the lake and extends southeast along the lake's outlet, the Shenango River, as far as the borough of Jamestown. On the northeastern side of the lake and the river, the CDP is in South Shenango Township; on the southwest side it is in West Shenango Township. According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , of which is land and , or 0.44%, is water. Pymatuning Reservoir
Pymatuning Reservoir is a man-made lake in Crawford County, Pennsylvania and Ashtabula County, Ohio in the United States, on land that was once a very large swamp. Much of it is incorporated into two state parks: Pymatuning State Park in Pennsylvania, and Pymatuning State Park in Ohio. History The first known inhabitants were the Mound builders. Two of their mounds were flooded by the creation of Pymatuning Lake. The Lenape were living in the area when European settlers first came there. The lake is named for the chief who lived in the area at the time, Pihmtomink. The Lenape were pushed out of the area by the Seneca tribe, a member of the Iroquois Confederacy. The Seneca were defeated by General Anthony Wayne's forces during the Northwest Indian War and left the area under the terms of the Treaty of Greenville. Jamestown is a borough in northwestern Mercer County, Pennsylvania, United States, along the Shenango River. The population was reported as 580 on the 2020 census.
