Purefoods–Swift Rivalry
The Purefoods Corporation had a basketball rivalry with the Republic Flour Mills (RFM) company in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) for most of the 1990s, where they competed not only in sports but also in products. Pre-PBA days Purefoods Corporation burst into the basketball scene in 1986 by joining the Philippine Amateur Basketball League (PABL) which had the RFM-Swifts as its founding members. Both companies, which were into food and beverage business, were the largest producer and marketer of processed meats in the Philippines. Their first-ever match-up took place during the second conference (Founder's Cup) at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum. Overall, RFM Corporation was more successful in the amateur league, its team won three championships from 1987 to 1989 and featured some of the best amateur cagers and national team members such as Elmer Cabahug, Renato Agustin, Ricric Marata, Alvin Patrimonio and Zaldy Realubit. The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) is a men's professional basketball league in the Philippines composed of twelve company-branded franchised teams. Founded in 1975, it is the first professional basketball league in Asia and is the second oldest continuously professional basketball league existing in the world after the National Basketball Association, NBA,Bartholomew, Rafe. Zaldy Realubit
Zaldy Realubit (born February 18, 1967) is a Filipino retired professional basketball player who is now the Chief Operating Officer of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League. He was also the head coach of the Pilipinas Aguilas. College and amateur career Realubit hails from Nasipit, Agusan del Norte. He completed his high school at the Northwestern Agusan College but it was at the University of San Jose–Recoletos where he got hooked into basketball under coach Yayoy Alcoseba. Realubit went on to play for Mama's Love in the Philippine Basketball League (PABL) from 1984-1985 and RFM-Swifts in his final two years in the amateur league and has blossomed into a fine center. The 1993 Swift Mighty Meaties season was the 4th season of the franchise in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). Summary In the All-Filipino Cup, Swift won their last two games in the eliminations and swept all four of their quarterfinal assignments for a six-game winning streak going into their best-of-five semifinal series against Coney Island (formerly Purefoods). The Mighty Meaties won twice over the Ice Cream Stars in two previous meetings only to be swept in three games by Coney Island in their semifinal series. Joseller "Yeng" Medina Guiao (born March 19, 1959) is a Filipino professional basketball head coach, politician, commentator and sports commissioner. He is currently the head coach of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters of the Philippine Basketball Association. He previously served as the interim head coach of the Philippine national team. Ely Capacio
Eliezer "Ely" O. Capacio (March 14, 1955 – February 23, 2014) was a Filipino basketball player, coach and executive. Born in Palo, Leyte, Philippines, he played a total of eight seasons as a forward-center for the Tanduay Rhum Makers from 1979 to 1986, averaging 5.9 points and 5.5 rebounds in a total of 324 games. The team won two championships during the 1986 PBA season. His younger brother, Glenn Capacio also played in the PBA. Amateur career The 6-4 center-forward was a veteran of the 1975 and 1977 Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) championships and the 1977 SEA games. Capacio was a member of the MICAA mythical selection in 1976 and was part of the YCO Painters champion team in 1979, before joining the pro ranks.
