Puneet Nath Datt
Second Lieutenant Puneet Nath Datt, AC (29 April 197320 July 1997) was an officer of the Indian Army's 11 Gorkha Rifles. He was posthumously awarded India's highest peacetime gallantry award, the Ashok Chakra, for bravery displayed in an Indian Army operation. The operation was conducted against terrorists hidden in a three-story building in the Nowshera area of Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. Early life Puneet Nath Datt was born on April 29, 1973, in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. He completed his schooling at St. Bethany's School in Darjeeling, St. Joseph's Academy in Dehradun, St. Xavier's School in Jaipur, and attained his class XII from Tagore Public School in Jaipur. As a child and while in high school, his ambition was to join the Indian Army, and he pursued it by preparing for entry into the renowned National Defence Academy. Ashoka Chakra Award
The Ashoka Chakra (alternative spelling: Ashok Chakra) is India's highest peacetime military decoration awarded for valor, courageous action, or self-sacrifice away from the battlefield. It is the peacetime equivalent of the Param Vir Chakra (PVC) and is awarded for the "most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent valour or self-sacrifice" other than in the face of the enemy. The decoration may be awarded either to military or civilian personnel. Naik Narbahadur Thapa, Havildar Bachittar Singh and Flight Lieutenant Suhas Biswas were the first recipients of the Ashoka Chakra. Nowshera, Srinagar
Nowshera is the notified area in the municipal committee of Srinagar, in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It is one of the oldest residential places in Srinagar founded by Zain-ul-Abidin. It is located about 9.9 km towards North from the commercial center of Kashmir. Gorkha Regiments (India)
Since the independence of India in 1947, as per the terms of the Britain–India–Nepal Tripartite Agreement, six Gorkha regiments, formerly part of the British Indian Army, became part of the Indian Army and have served ever since. The troops are mainly from ethnic Gurkha communities of Nepal.
