{{single source, date=February 2019 Pumping is a skateboarding technique used to accelerate without the rider's feet leaving the board. Pumping is a technique similar to pumping a surfboard. Transition Transition pumping can only be done when there is a slope differential between the front and rear wheels. On a ramp it therefore is only possible at the top and bottom of the slope, but in a pipe it is possible at any height above the flat. The rider should push downward on the truck with the greatest slope under the wheels. On the top of a ramp the front wheels should be pushed, and at the bottom the rear trucks should be pushed. Quarter Pipe
A half-pipe is a structure used in gravity extreme sports such as snowboarding, skateboarding, skiing, freestyle BMX, skating, and scooter riding. Overview The structure resembles a cross-section of a swimming pool, essentially two concave ramps (or quarter-pipes), topped by copings and decks, facing each other across a flat transition, also known as a ''tranny''. Originally half-pipes were half sections of a large diameter pipe. Since the 1980s, half-pipes contain an extended ''flat bottom'' between the quarter-pipes. The original style half-pipes are no longer built. Flat ground provides time to regain balance after landing and more time to prepare for the next trick. Skateboard
A skateboard is a type of sports equipment used for skateboarding. They are usually made of a specially designed 7-8 ply maple plywood deck and polyurethane wheels attached to the underside by a pair of skateboarding trucks. The skateboarder moves by pushing with one foot while the other foot remains balanced on the board, or by pumping one's legs in structures such as a bowl or half pipe. A skateboard can also be used by simply standing on the deck while on a downward slope and allowing gravity to propel the board and rider. Carve Turn
A carved turn is a skiing and snowboarding term for the technique of turning by shifting the ski or snowboard onto its edges. When edged, the sidecut geometry causes the ski (in the following, snowboard is implicit and not mentioned) to bend into an arc, and the ski naturally follows this arc shape to produce a turning motion. The carve is efficient in allowing the skier to maintain speed because, unlike the older stem Christie and parallel turns, the skis don't create drag by sliding sideways. Starting a carved turn requires the ski to be rotated onto its edge, which can be accomplished through angulation of the hips and knees applied to both skis, leading them to efficiently carve a naturally parallel turn. Charitable Distance Skating
Charitable distance skating refers to long-distance travel on a longboard or skateboard with an associated charitable fundraising effort. Perhaps one of the most famous boards in the world, Elsa (a rollsroll carbon longboard) has over 10,000 km under her wheels. Elsa was pushed from Perth to Brisbane between August 20, 2006, and January 22, 2007, by Dave Cornthwaite, of BoardFree, at a distance of 5,823 km, which broke American Jack Smith's previous distance record by 994 km. Cornthwaite was also the first person to skateboard the length of Britain, travelling from John o' Groats to Land's End between April 30, 2006, and June 2, 2006, a total distance of . Adrenalina Skateboard Marathon
The Adrenalina Skateboard Marathon is a series of international longboard racing events. Each race is on course on a skateboard that must be pushed by foot. The event is owned and operated by Adrenalina / Nata Media Inc. History The first Adrenalina Skateboard Marathon took place on November 6, 2010, at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. One hundred and twenty-five people participated in the event and there were three hundred people total in attendance. A large international field was drawn, due to the fact it was the largest prize purse to date, including a ten thousand dollar grand prize. Jeff Vyain was the first winner of the event.
