Pullman F.C.
Pullman F.C. was one of the dominant American soccer teams of the early twentieth century. Established in 1893 as the Pullman Company team, it was an inaugural member of the Chicago League of Association Football before moving to the Association Football League. It dominated the Peel Cup during the 1910s and early 1920s. History In 1893, the Pullman Company entered its newly created company soccer team as an inaugural member of the Chicago League of Association Football (CLAF). Over the years, the Pullman Company sponsored numerous soccer teams, including teams for women, but the senior team remained in the CLAF for decades, competing for both the league championship, known as the Spalding Cup, and league cup, known as the Jackson Challenge Cup. Pullman Company
The Pullman Company, founded by George Pullman, was a manufacturer of railroad cars in the mid-to-late 19th century through the first half of the 20th century, during the boom of railroads in the United States. Through rapid late-19th century development of mass production and takeover of rivals, the company developed a virtual monopoly on production and ownership of sleeper cars. During a severe economic downturn, the 1894 Pullman Strike by company workers proved a transforming moment in American labor history. At the company's peak in the early 20th century, its cars accommodated 26 million people a year, and it in effect operated "the largest hotel in the world". Peel Cup
The Peter J. Peel Challenge Cup, better known as the Peel Cup, was an open soccer competition that crowned the Illinois state champion until it was replaced by the Illinois Governor’s Cup in 1971. History Origins Peter Peel was born in 1866 in Dublin, Ireland and moved to Chicago, Illinois when young. He founded the first soccer association in Illinois, served as president of the Chicago Soccer League, and later became president of the United States Football Association. In 1909, he established a competition, named after himself, open to all soccer clubs in the Midwestern United States. Proceeds from the competition went to a fund to benefit injured soccer players. The first tournament included clubs from Chicago, Peoria, and Coal City. Peel also had plans to include clubs from St. Louis, Detroit, and Cleveland the following year.
